Akumen, Inc Washington, District of Columbia, United States Position Title:

Database Administrator Akumen, Inc. is seeking an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) to support the administration, performance, security, and availability of mission-critical database environments supporting federal government systems. The DBA will be responsible for maintaining reliable database operations, troubleshooting complex issues, supporting application and infrastructure teams, and ensuring database environments meet established security and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Install, configure, administer, monitor, and maintain relational database environments supporting development, testing, staging, and production systems. Monitor database availability, capacity, and performance; identify bottlenecks and implement tuning and optimization strategies. Manage database backup, recovery, replication, patching, upgrades, and disaster recovery processes to ensure system availability and data integrity. Implement and maintain database security controls, including user access, permissions, authentication, auditing, and vulnerability remediation. Troubleshoot database incidents, performance issues, failed jobs, connectivity problems, and application/database integration issues. Collaborate with application developers, infrastructure engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and DevSecOps teams to support deployments and resolve technical issues. Develop and maintain database documentation, standard operating procedures, configuration records, and technical artifacts required for operational and security compliance.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related professional experience. Significant relevant experience may be substituted for a degree. 5+ years of professional experience administering enterprise database environments. Hands-on experience with database technologies such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or comparable enterprise relational database platforms. Strong experience with SQL, database performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, backup/recovery, and database troubleshooting. Experience implementing database security, access controls, patching, vulnerability remediation, and configuration management within secure environments. Experience supporting highly available production systems and coordinating database activities across application, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience supporting database environments within the Department of Defense or other federal government agencies. Experience with cloud-hosted databases and services within Microsoft Azure or AWS environments. Experience supporting database automation, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, or DevSecOps environments. Familiarity with DISA STIGs, NIST security controls, RMF, and federal cybersecurity requirements. Experience with database clustering, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions. Relevant database, cloud, or cybersecurity certifications. Experience working in Agile/Scrum development and operations environments.
