Data Center Technician 3 / Facilities Technician Job Description This role supports 24/7 data center operations by operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting critical facility infrastructure in a high‑reliability environment. The Facilities Technician ensures that mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and fire suppression systems perform reliably to support continuous data center uptime. This position is well suited for a hands‑on technician with strong mechanical aptitude who can work independently, follow procedures, and respond calmly and effectively to issues in a mission‑critical setting. Responsibilities Operate and maintain critical and non‑critical data center infrastructure, including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and support systems. Perform preventative maintenance on facility systems such as pumps, fire suppression systems, HVAC equipment, plumbing, and general building components. Conduct regular engineering and site rounds, record readings, document observations, and escalate abnormal conditions or alarms as needed. Monitor power usage, cooling capacity, and environmental conditions within data halls to help ensure stable and efficient operations. Use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to manage planned and unplanned maintenance tasks, including creating, updating, and closing work orders. Maintain accurate and complete documentation related to rounds, maintenance activities, repairs, and change management processes. Communicate effectively with engineers and other technical staff to relay site conditions, receive direction on troubleshooting, and coordinate work activities. Interpret blueprints, equipment manuals, and technical documentation to support troubleshooting and repair activities. Perform general facility maintenance and repairs, including lighting, basic electrical work, and cleaning tasks related to equipment and infrastructure. Support fire suppression and life‑safety systems by monitoring status, assisting with inspections, and responding to issues in accordance with established procedures. Troubleshoot facility and equipment issues methodically, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions within defined guidelines. Assist with implementing changes to infrastructure and systems, following established change management processes to minimize operational risk. Respond to issues during regular and off‑shift hours as needed, including occasional coverage of 2nd or 3rd shift and weekend operations. Essential Skills 5-7 years of relevant experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, or a similar role with exposure to mechanical, electrical, and fire suppression systems. Hands‑on experience with HVAC systems, including operation, basic troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance. Practical electrical skills applicable to facility and data center environments, including safe operation and basic repair of electrical systems. Experience with fire suppression systems and related life‑safety equipment. Proficiency in general maintenance and repair, including plumbing, lighting, and building systems. Ability to use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to manage and document maintenance activities. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to learn complex systems and follow technical procedures. Ability to work independently in a high‑stakes, mission‑critical environment and make sound decisions within established guidelines. Effective troubleshooting skills with a methodical approach to identifying and resolving facility issues. Clear and professional communication skills to relay site conditions and collaborate with engineers and technical teams. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation. Comfort working in a 24/7 data center environment with rotating or occasional off‑shift responsibilities. Additional Skills & Qualifications 1-3 years of experience in mission‑critical environments, such as data centers or similar high‑reliability facilities, preferred. Prior military experience or technical school training in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, or related fields preferred. Electrical or mechanical license preferred. Experience with facility maintenance in environments that require strict adherence to procedures and documentation. Familiarity with change management processes in technical or industrial settings. Demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure and respond effectively to time‑sensitive issues. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation. Work Environment This position supports a 24/7 data center environment focused on high reliability and continuous operation. Standard schedules are on 1st shift, either 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The role also includes coverage of 2nd or 3rd shift as needed, including occasional weekend work, with all off‑shift coverage scheduled as 12‑hour shifts. The work involves regular rounds in data halls and facility spaces, interaction with mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and fire suppression equipment, and frequent use of a computerized maintenance management system to track tasks and documentation. The environment is procedure‑driven, safety‑focused, and highly technical, with an emphasis on clear communication and adherence to established processes. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Hagerstown, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $32.00/hr.
