A Data Center Technician or Engineer organizes data access, maintenance and access support to a data center. Maybe help to store and organize data, such as an organization's records or financial information. Ensures that users can easily access the information they need and that data are protected from unauthorized access.
Description The Data Center Technician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of our modular data centers and associated Bitcoin mining hardware. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, networking, and computer hardware, as well as the ability to work independently in remote field environments.
Responsibilities Installation & Deployment:
Assemble, install, and configure Bitcoin mining hardware (ASICs, PSUs, networking equipment) within NYDIG's modular data centers. Perform initial power-up and testing of new deployments, ensuring all systems are operating correctly. Assist with the physical setup and connection of data centers at various oilfield locations.
Maintenance & Repair:
Conduct routine preventative maintenance on mining equipment, including cleaning, fan replacement, and cable management. Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware failures (e.g., ASIC board issues, PSU failures, network connectivity problems). Perform component-level repairs where possible or facilitate the replacement of faulty equipment. Manage and track spare parts inventory.
Troubleshooting & Support:
Respond to and resolve technical issues reported through monitoring systems or by other team members. Utilize diagnostic tools and software to identify root causes of problems. Provide remote and on-site technical support as needed.
Networking & Electrical:
Basic understanding of networking principles (TCP/IP, Ethernet, switch configuration). Ability to work safely with low-voltage and potentially high-voltage electrical systems (training provided as needed). Ensure proper grounding and electrical connections for all equipment.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inventory changes. Document troubleshooting steps and solutions for knowledge sharing. Report on equipment performance and identify trends for improvement.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, especially when working in industrial environments. Ensure all work is performed in compliance with relevant electrical and safety standards.
Team Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with other technicians, engineers, and remote operations teams. Provide training and guidance to junior technicians as required. Communicate effectively with external vendors and contractors when necessary. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical certification in IT, Electrical, or a related field is a plus. 2+ years of experience in a hands-on technical role, preferably in IT hardware, data center operations, or industrial electronics. Strong understanding of computer hardware components and troubleshooting methodologies. Basic knowledge of networking concepts and ability to troubleshoot network connectivity issues. Experience with Linux command line is a plus. Familiarity with Bitcoin mining hardware (ASICs) is highly desirable but not required (training will be provided). Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics. Proven ability to work independently in remote and sometimes challenging outdoor environments. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs) and work in various physical positions (e.g., kneeling, crouching, standing for extended periods). Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required Must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Preferred Experience working with electrical systems, generators, or industrial equipment. Prior experience in the oil and gas industry. Experience with remote monitoring systems (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).
