Job Description:
The Data Manager leads the Data Team in developing and executing a data strategy that enables data-informed decision-making across Fortis. This role oversees data professionals (data engineers, data analysts), establishes data governance frameworks, and partners with construction operations and shared services leadership to maximize the value of data as a strategic asset. The Data Manager ensures data infrastructure, tools, and practices support current business needs while positioning the organization for future growth. Strategic Leadership & Vision Develop and execute a comprehensive data strategy aligned with Fortis' business goals and construction operations. Define the data team's roadmap, prioritizing initiatives based on business impact and strategic value. Identify emerging data trends, technologies, and best practices relevant to construction and shared services. Champion data-informed culture across the organization. Present data strategy, insights, and recommendations to executive leadership. Team Leadership & Development Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data professionals including data engineers and data analysts. Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance evaluations. Foster a collaborative team environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement. Work with Talent Acquisition team to recruit, onboard, and retain top data talent. Identify skill gaps and provide training and development opportunities. Promote knowledge sharing and cross-functional collaboration within and outside the team. Stakeholder Collaboration & Partnership Partner with construction operations, project teams, and shared services teams to understand data needs and identify opportunities for improvement. Build strong relationships with team leaders to ensure data initiatives align with business objectives. Serve as the primary data liaison between IT, business units, and leadership. Facilitate cross-functional data projects and initiatives. Translate business requirements into technical solutions and data team priorities. Data Governance & Quality Develop, implement, and enforce data governance policies, standards, and procedures. Ensure data accuracy, completeness, consistency, and security across all systems. Establish data quality metrics and monitoring processes. Define and maintain data definitions, standards, and documentation. Oversee data access controls and ensure compliance with privacy regulations. Collaborate with IT and other teams on data protection and risk management. Operations & Delivery Management Evaluate the effectiveness of data projects, tools, and platforms to ensure they meet business needs and drive adoption. Manage the data team's project portfolio, balancing competing priorities and resource constraints. Establish goals and track data team performance and business impact. Optimize data workflows and processes to improve efficiency and reduce bottlenecks. Oversee the selection, implementation, and management of data tools and technologies. Manage relationships with data platform vendors and external partners. Infrastructure & Technical Oversight Provide strategic direction for data infrastructure, including data warehouses, ETL processes, and BI platforms. Ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of data systems. Oversee technical architecture decisions for data solutions. Stay current with construction technology platforms and enterprise systems integration needs. Other Assist in other duties as assigned, relevant to the achievement of the position's and team's objectives.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
5+ years of professional industry experience in data analytics, construction technology, or related field. Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Engineering, or related degree program, or equivalent work experience. Strong understanding of data architecture, data warehousing, ETL processes, and BI platforms (particularly Power BI). Hands-on technical experience with data engineering, analytics, or BI development. Experience with SQL, data modeling, and modern data stack technologies. Experience and understanding of construction technologies. Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into technical solutions. Excellence in stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration. Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to present to executive leadership. Experience establishing data governance frameworks and best practices. Strong project management capabilities. Ability to make informed decisions and explain processes and choices confidently. Must possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record in accordance with Fortis policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MBA or Master's degree in Data Science, Analytics, or related field. Progressive experience in data management, analytics, or business intelligence roles. Experience in construction, engineering, architecture, or project-based industries. Proven track record of developing and executing data strategies that drive business value. Experience leading data teams in organizations with 500+ employees. Experience with construction management platforms (i.e. Viewpoint Vista, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Primavera P6). Experience with enterprise systems (ERP, HRIS, CRM) and system integrations. Experience with cloud data platforms (Azure, GCP, Databricks). Knowledge of advanced analytics, data science, or machine learning applications. Experience managing vendor relationships and technology procurement. Certifications in data management, business intelligence, or project management. Experience implementing change management for data initiatives. Background in operations or field roles within construction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS A
portion of work is performed in a professional office environment with frequent presence in the work areas of active Fortis construction sites (where wearing personal protective equipment is required) and within site office facilities. A component of role is stationary, often standing or sitting for long periods of time. Utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Communication with internal and external contacts, including speaking and hearing. May occasionally push, pull or lift up to 25 lbs.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent travel to regional offices, jobsites, and industry events (up to 50%). May include occasional overnight or multi-day travel. All Fortis positions require some level of driving.
