Job Title:
GIS Technician Job Description We are seeking a GIS Technician to support the maintenance and accuracy of the electric distribution Geographic Information System (GIS). This role focuses on data updates, asset mapping, and system-of-record accuracy for the electric distribution network. The GIS Technician works closely with GIS Analysts, engineers, operations staff, and field personnel to ensure the GIS reflects current field conditions and supports daily operations and outage response. Responsibilities Update and maintain electric distribution GIS data, including poles, lines, devices, services, and related assets. Process as‑built drawings, field notes, and work orders into the system. Perform data entry, editing, and validation to ensure accuracy and completeness. Support operations and outage response through timely GIS updates. Assist with QA/QC checks and correction of data discrepancies. Generate basic maps and GIS outputs for internal use. Coordinate with engineering, operations, vegetation management, and field crews to resolve issues according to established GIS standards, procedures, and documentation requirements. Essential Skills Associates or Bachelors Degree in Geospatial Information Sciences, GIS, Geography, Engineering, or related field. Prior experience can substitute for degrees if accompanied by a GIS certification. 1+ years of experience, preferably in Utility or Infrastructure settings. Experience with Esri GIS tools such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work in a production, operations-focused environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience supporting electric utility GIS or linear infrastructure assets. Familiarity with as‑built processing, field‑to‑GIS workflows, or asset mapping. Experience working with engineering or operations teams. Experience in cooperative, municipal utility, or regulated utility environments. Work Environment The position is based in our Fredericksburg office with a hybrid work schedule. Initially, you will need to be onsite to understand the system, after which remote work can be arranged. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fredericksburg, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $42.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
