This position will be part of the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office (MnGeo), which coordinates geographic information systems within the state, creating connections between state agencies and other stakeholders from public and private organizations. Job Summary Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) is seeking a motivated Student GIS Technician to support the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office (MnGeo) with key Geographic Information System (GIS) projects. This is a great opportunity for students interested in gaining real-world GIS experience in a government setting. As a Student GIS Technician, you will assist with: Building and maintaining geospatial data frameworks to support statewide data needs (e.g., boundaries, ownership, transportation, and addresses). Reviewing, creating, enhancing GIS data and metadata for publication on the Minnesota Geospatial Commons. Supporting automation and web development tasks. Contributing to other GIS-related projects as assigned. You will work alongside experience professionals and gain practical skills while supporting projects that impact communities across Minnesota. This position is temporary and includes full state fringe benefits; it is anticipated to last two (2) years. This position requires an employee to be onsite at 600 North Robert Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location. Telework for Minnesota IT Services is available on a limited basis. Employees will be required to meet current telework eligibility requirements.   • To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional Senior you must be enrolled in a postsecondary or graduate educational program or plan to enroll within three months.
Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment. Currently enrolled in an accredited college program as a junior, senior, or graduate student. Academic programs can include GIS, Computer Science, Data Science, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Natural Resource Management, or Forest, Urban/Regional Planning, or Management Information Systems with some coursework that emphasizes GIS technologies (Introduction to GIS, Advanced GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis, and Introduction to Cartography).
Experience must include:
Class work or experience using ArcGIS Pro including creating, editing, and maintaining file-based geodatabases. Class work or experience managing ArcGIS online content, and publishing features and services to portal, ArcGIS online, or HUB. Class work or experience working with geospatial data and metadata. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding. Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience or class work with scripting for databases with Python. Experience or class work with configuring and editing feature classes in ArcMap. Knowledge of database design methods and documentation techniques. Familiarity with code versioning systems.
