$72,000-$78,000Position OverviewMontserrat College of Art seeks a collaborative, service-oriented Assistant Director of Information Technology to play a key leadership role in the delivery, evolution, and continuous improvement of the Colleges technology services.Working in close partnership with the Director of IT, the Assistant Director supports daily operations while helping guide the transition from a reactive, maintenance-driven model to a proactive, strategically planned technology environment. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with operational leadership, emphasizing system reliability, documentation, process improvement, and long-term sustainability.
In a small college setting, the Assistant Director serves as both a technical leader and institutional partnersupporting faculty, staff, and students while building scalable systems, improving workflows, and contributing to a forward-looking technology roadmap that aligns with the Colleges academic mission and creative environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesIT Operations & Systems LeadershipPartner with the Director of IT in the day-to-day leadership of campus technology operations, ensuring reliable, secure, and effective delivery of IT services.
Drive the evolution of IT practices from reactive support to proactive planning through improved processes, system standardization, and lifecycle management.
Support and maintain core infrastructure, including:
Windows and Mac endpointsWindows Server environmentsActive Directory / identity systemsEndpoint management platforms (e.g., JAMF Pro, PDQ Deploy/Inventory)Network-connected devices, printers, and classroom technologyOversee system installations, upgrades, configuration, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring.
Collaborate with external vendors and service providers supporting network infrastructure and specialized systems.
Implement and uphold best practices for system security, data integrity, and service continuity.
Knowledge Management & DocumentationDevelop, organize, and maintain comprehensive system documentation, operational procedures, and technical standards.
Build and sustain a centralized knowledge base to support IT staff efficiency and enable end-user self-service where appropriate.
Establish documentation practices that ensure continuity, reduce single points of failure, and support onboarding and training.
Academic Technology & Faculty PartnershipServe as a key partner to faculty, supporting technology needs across classrooms, studios, and labs.
Provide both responsive support and proactive guidance to enhance teaching, learning, and creative workflows.
Anticipate emerging academic technology needs and recommend solutions that improve instructional delivery and student experience.
Support academic systems including learning management platforms, digital tools, and specialized software environments.
Contribute to training, documentation, and communication efforts that improve technology adoption and confidence.
Helpdesk Coordination & Team DevelopmentHelp coordinate CTS helpdesk operations to ensure timely, organized, and high-quality support services.
Assist in supervising and mentoring student IT technicians, including training, task assignment, and performance guidance.
Promote a culture of strong customer service, accountability, and continuous improvement within the IT team.
Cross-Department Collaboration & Process ImprovementWork collaboratively with administrative departments to evaluate and improve operational workflows through the effective use of technology.
Identify inefficiencies and implement solutions that enhance productivity, data flow, and user experience.
Serve as a bridge between technical systems and institutional processes, ensuring technology supports operational effectiveness across the College.
Asset Management & Strategic Technology PlanningPartner with the Director to support asset lifecycle management, procurement, inventory tracking, and license compliance.
Contribute to the development and execution of a 35 year technology roadmap aligned with institutional priorities.
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and adaptable to future needs.
Support planning and implementation of campus-wide technology upgrades and initiatives.
Campus Events & Operational SupportProvide technical support for institutional events such as Open House, Artrageous, Commencement, and other major activities.
Coordinate IT support for events requiring AV, presentation, or specialized technical setup.
Provide occasional evening or weekend support as required.
QualificationsEducationBachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.
Experience46 years of progressively responsible IT experienceExperience supporting both Mac and Windows environmentsExperience in higher education or academic environments preferredTechnical SkillsStrong familiarity with:
Mac OS and Windows operating systemsEndpoint management systems (JAMF Pro, PDQ Deploy/Inventory or similar)Windows Server and Active DirectoryMicrosoft 365 and/or Google WorkspaceNetworking fundamentals and wireless systemsClassroom AV and presentation technologyExperience with the following is highly desirable:
