MAJOR FUNCTION
  • This Position reports to the Network Services Supervisor.
The Network Analyst's roll is to work with the Network Services Team, Senior Network Analysts and Information Technology (IT) management staff in planning, coordinating and implementing the County's network infrastructure, attached storage and the physical / virtual servers in a secure and dependable environment. This person will also troubleshoot network and server performance issues, as well as analyze network traffic, and provide capacity and project planning.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Technical Skills:
Responsible to support data communication requirements and standards for the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC). Provide technical expertise in analysis, design, configuration, implementation, documentation, project management and ongoing support for assigned network resources including compute, storage and infrastructure. Responsible for installation and support of network hardware and software. Responsible for assigned areas of installed base of physical and virtual file servers, storage devices, networks, and third party application software including monitoring tools. Responsible for overseeing assigned local area network operational procedures including system security and data integrity including disaster recovery.
Technology Used:
  • Installing, configuring, and managing a VMware vSphere environment
  • 3Par / EMC Storage Area Networking (SAN)
  • Administering Cisco switches, routers and Meraki wireless access points in a large computer network.
  • Working with Microsoft Active Directory
  • Network Security Tools
  • Experience configuring and maintaining cloud/ hosted infrastructure.
  • Working with an enterprise-level backup solution.
  • Management of a Windows Server current version physical and virtual environment.
Works with County Commissioners, Administration and Divisions to review new and modified requests for hardware, software and network systems for adherence to documented standards. Ensures that all LAN, WAN, Wireless Fiber Optic and Virtual environments and related equipment are maintained in a good state of repair. Assists the IT management staff in developing short and long range recommendations of networking, storage and computing needs (i.e.: analysis of equipment, repairs, maintenance contracts, etc.). Performs needs assessments to assure appropriate justification for improvements and/or modifications. Submits basic information necessary to prepare portions of the IT budget and other user Division/Department budget information, which pertain to networks, storage and computing environments. Ensures that all county networks are compatible with, and can effectively interface to one another, including systems in use by the Constitutional Offices. Provides connectivity between the BoCC platforms and other platforms interfaced to the County. Monitors activity on all network, computing and storage systems, perpetuating efficient online services. Participates with periodic capacity plans of the network traffic, taking necessary actions to maximize the availability of the on-line network. Sets up procedures for reporting and ensuring timely response to network and personal computer operational problems. Makes evaluations and determinations for repair needs identifying problem(s) and ensuring that matters are corrected whether the problem can be resolved internally or by contacting vendor repair technicians. Performs related duties as required. Travel is required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
  • Thorough knowledge of standard Network Infrastructure, Storage and Computing virtual environments used within the county.
Ability to understand network infrastructure, Storage and Computing environment management issues and administrative techniques necessary to support assigned environment. Ability to assist user activities with various software package(s) and a variety of network and computing platforms including physical and virtual. Must have the ability to see, write and perform data entry keying efforts. Ability to sit for long periods. Ability to concentrate on detail and sequential work tasks. Ability to see, talk, ambulate independently, drive, and make written notes. Ability to speak in a manner than can be understood. Ability to bend, stoop, sit, and stand. Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination. Ability to research, investigate, experiment, detect, inspect, verify, recognize, and recommend solutions. Ability to recognize incorrect information or work and take remedial actions independently. Ability to plan, write and prepare procedural documentation, practical manuals and communication reports/justification documents. Ability to maintain state of the art knowledge of data communications and networking systems and devices including personal computer hardware and software. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, officials and management information services users. Ability to use independent judgment and make cost effective decisions/recommendations. Ability to develop effective work methods and procedures. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited two (2) year community college or technical/vocational school.
  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience in the support of large computer networks,
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of employment within this classification.
A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must provide and utilize personal transportation in daily travel to remote sites to perform service calls.
Must have a home telephone (or primary cell phone) within thirty (30) days of employment in this classification as employee is subject to call out. This position is subject to being placed 'Stand By' / 'On Call' for scheduled nights and/or weekends. This position shall be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
SPECIAL PREFERENCE
  • Two (2) years' experience in the following:
  • Installing, configuring, and managing a VMware vSphere environment
