Job Description

Puritan Automation is a dynamic, entrepreneurial company specializing in custom assembly and test systems. Since 1950, we've built a reputation for solving complex manufacturing challenges through practical, high-performance machinery—ranging from single-station automation to dial tables and fully integrated work cells. We're a small, highly capable team where decisions are made quickly, engineers have real ownership, and good ideas get implemented—not buried in layers of process. As our long-tenured Chief Designer prepares to retire after 40 years, we are looking for the right individual to step into a critical leadership role and help shape the next chapter of the company. The Opportunity This is more than a design role—it's a chance to take ownership of the mechanical engineering function within a growing, specialized automation company. The right candidate will have the ability to influence product direction, customer solutions, and engineering standards, with a clear path to expanded leadership responsibility over time. Key Responsibilities Lead mechanical design of custom assembly and test equipment Develop concepts, layouts, and proposals for new business opportunities Own projects from initial concept through final commissioning Design detailed assemblies and components using SolidWorks Collaborate with controls engineers on integrated electromechanical systems Support build, debug, and customer runoff activities on the shop floor Establish design standards, best practices, and documentation discipline Mentor and guide junior engineering resources as the team grows What We're Looking For 10-20+ years of experience in custom automation or special machine design Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (assemblies, layouts, detailing) Deep understanding of mechanical systems, motion control, and machine integration Working knowledge of electrical controls, pneumatics, and sensors Proven ability to develop concepts and support proposal/quoting efforts Hands-on mindset — comfortable being involved in build and debug Ability to operate independently and make sound engineering decisions Strong communication skills with both customers and internal teams Why This Role Stands Out Direct impact on company direction and engineering strategy High level of autonomy and decision-making authority No corporate bureaucracy — fast-moving, execution-focused environment Opportunity to grow into a broader technical or leadership role Work on real, buildable machines—not theoretical designs
