We are seeking an HPC Engineering Team Lead to join a Scientific Computing team supporting high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific research at NIAID. This role provides technical leadership for a HPC engineering team while remaining hands-on in the administration, optimization, and support of HPC infrastructure, scientific software, and user services. The Team Lead will help guide operational priorities, mentor staff, and partner with scientific users and stakeholders to ensure reliable, high-quality HPC services.

This position is located in Rockville, MD and requires 2-3 days a week onsite
Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day technical leadership for the HPC engineering team supporting local scientific computing environments
  • Oversee administration, maintenance, and optimization of HPC systems, storage, compute and supporting services
  • Lead installation, configuration, testing, and lifecycle support of scientific software and module environments
  • Support scheduler operations, resource management, and troubleshooting for user jobs and workflows
  • Collaborate with researchers and scientific support staff to understand needs and improve HPC usability and service delivery
  • Develop and document operational processes, standards, and best practices for HPC support
  • Mentor engineers, coordinate priorities, and help drive continuous improvement across the team
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues involving compute, storage, networking, and scientific applications
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, scientific computing, or a related field and at least 5+ years experience in HPC
  • Strong experience supporting and administering Linux-based HPC environments
  • Experience with job schedulers such as Slurm and with supporting shared research computing environments
  • Experience installing, optimizing, and supporting scientific software, compilers, libraries, and module systems
  • Familiarity with storage systems, parallel filesystems, networking, and general HPC architecture
  • Experience supporting scientific users and workflows in a service-oriented environment
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills
  • Experience leading technical teams, coordinating work, or mentoring junior staff
  • Familiarity with software build and package management tools such as Spack, EasyBuild etc
  • Experience with container technologies such as Apptainer/Singularity or Docker
  • Exposure to cloud or hybrid HPC environments
  • Ability to balance operational support, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on enabling scientific outcomesThe likely salary range for this position is $131,750
  • $178,250.
This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
