FENS Role Overview:

In this role, you will serve as a Systems Integration Engineer, SME to drive the successful delivery of complex network infrastructure and software initiatives that support the nation's airspace. You will support the build and integration of the new FAA's Enterprise Network Service (FENS) infrastructure with the existing network and migrate the services to the new modern secured, resilient and scalable network infrastructure across the National Airspace System (NAS).

Work Location:

This position is 100% on-site, primarily located in Herndon, VA, with an alternate work location available in Bowie, MD. Candidates must be able to work on-site at one of these locations based on program requirements. What You'll Do Lead the design, integration, and testing of systems that support the National Airspace System (NAS). Turn early architecture drawings into working IP network solutions.

Provide clear technical directions and take ownership of technical tasks and related project activities.

Assess requirement documents and design the network; communicate the standards to hardware and software engineering teams.

Define dashboards, key performance indicators (KPIs), and technical reports to verify that new designs and deployments meet required reliability and resilience standards for mission critical aviation data.

Provide clear, actionable status updates, dashboards, and briefings to stakeholders and senior leadership.

Proactively identify, track, and mitigate technical risks, dependencies, and bottlenecks, particularly in network deployments. At Peraton, you won't just support the mission

Qualifications Position Requirements:

U.S. citizenship required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of experience (or equivalent combination: Master's 10+, Associate's 14+, HS diploma 16+)

Experience in Integrating LAN/WAN routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), SD-WAN overlays, and security architectures into a unified, scalable enterprise blueprint.

Experience in designing and executing cutovers, parallel-run, and rollback strategies to migrate legacy WAN circuits and data center links to next-generation SD-WAN platforms with zero unmanaged downtime

Experience with onboarding and transitioning the network segments/devices to new Enterprise Network Management Tools (e.g., Science Logic, SolarWinds, Splunk, NetScout, Datadog) and maintain full asset visibility and real-time monitoring.

Experience in Enforcing zero-trust perimeter defenses across external network boundaries, integrating Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW), DMZ isolation, IDS/IPS, and SASE framework components.

Experience in deploying temporary and permanent transition gateways to maintain secure connectivity between legacy subnets and target network states during phased cutovers.

Solid understanding in designing and implementing multi-path service flow monitoring, Application Performance Monitoring (APM to track real-time end-to-end packet performance, jitter, loss, and latency.

Knowledge in Developing, testing, and standardizing programmatic configuration templates (CLI, SD-WAN policy templates) for automated deployment across routers, switches, transition gateways, and firewalls.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with National Airspace System (NAS) architecture or modernization initiatives (e.g., FENS) or similar mission-critical government network standards
  • Strong ability to interpret complex data and deliver actionable insights with Proven experience designing efficient workflows.
  • Experience leading the technical integration side of large infrastructure initiatives; ability to apply project management methodologies to ensure delivery, compliance, and mission alignment.
  • Technical Certifications such as Cisco CCNP/CCIE, Juniper JNCIA/JNCIS, Cloud Architect or Equivalent
  • INCOSE Associate Systems Engineering Professional ASEP
  • PMP certification #BNATCS

  • $179,000.

This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
