Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) Service Technician Position Summary The Plasma Transferred Arc (PTA) Service Technician is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and repairing PTA welding and hardfacing systems used in industrial manufacturing environments. This role ensures reliable system performance, optimal coating quality, and safe operation for customers utilizing PTA equipment. The technician will work both on-site at customer facilities and in-house, providing expert technical support and hands-on service to maximize customers equipment uptime. Travel is usually during the work week with one to three days onsite and two days of travel. Currently Travel is mostly in the continental United States, with the remainder being Canada and Mexico. Possibility of international travel in the future. Key Responsibilities On-site Installation & Commissioning Install and commission PTA welding systems, power supplies, powder feeders, torch assemblies, and related automation equipment. Calibrate system parameters, including arc current, powder flow rates, gas settings, and cooling systems. Perform initial test welds to validate correct configuration and coating quality. Train onsite operators on machine operation including best practices for PTA welding, including surface preparation, deposition techniques, and simple metallurgy basics. On-site Preventive Maintenance & Repair Conduct preventive maintenance, including cleaning, assessment, component replacement, alignment checks, and system diagnostics. Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and control-system faults to identify root causes and implement effective repairs. Replace worn consumables such as torch components etc. On-site and Remote Technical Support Provide on-site and remote customer support for operational issues, parameter settings, and process optimization. Document all service activities, repair reports, and recommended follow-up actions. Adjust programming on automated PTA systems when applicable. Recommend upgrades or component replacements to enhance system reliability. In-house Support • Assemble PTA welding systems from prebuilt assemblies, load software, calibrate and run-off. • Occasionally assist with 2D AutoCAD drawings orPLC, HMI
software. • Occasionally assist HVOF engineer with HVOF machine calibration and runoff. • Assist with other work as needed. Safety & Compliance Follow all safety procedures related to high‑temperature processes, high‑voltage equipment, and powdered materials. Ensure all service activities comply with customer, company, and industry safety standards. Required Qualifications Experience with control panel wiring, machine controls, PLCs, HMI's, CNC, or robotic automation systems. Experience in industrial maintenance. Hands-on experience with welding systems (PTA, TIG, MIG, or laser preferred). Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills. Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals. Proficiency with hand tools, multimeters, and diagnostic equipment. Willingness to travel to customer sites as needed. Preferred Qualifications Technical diploma or associate degree in electrical engineering technology, welding technology, or related field. Experience specifically with PTA welding, thermal spray, or hardfacing equipment. Knowledge of surface engineering, metallurgy, and material properties. Experience with OMRON CxProgrammer, CxDesigner, and Sysmac Studio a plus. Previous field service experience in industrial environments.
