Job Description

The System Administrator III performs system support functions on segments of the server environment, including planned and emergency maintenance; performance and security analysis; and monitoring, tuning and implementing new products and procedures. Plan, implement, oversee and maintain server and network infrastructures and projects. Analyzes emerging technology and makes recommendations for constant network and infrastructure services and capabilities improvements. The items below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by an individual assigned to this position. The position description is subject to change by the City as the needs of the City and requirements of the position change.
  • Administration and support of enterprise infrastructure and mission-critical systems.
  • Manage and optimize virtualization and hyperconverged infrastructure environments.
  • Support enterprise on-prem services, identity management, and business continuity operations.
  • Oversee backup, recovery, replication, and disaster recovery operations.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance, reliability, and operational health.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced infrastructure and application issues.
  • Support cybersecurity initiatives, vulnerability remediation, and compliance requirements.
  • Manage infrastructure upgrades, maintenance activities, and system implementations.
  • Coordinate with vendors, consultants, department leadership, and project stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Mentor peer administrators and provide technical support within the IT team.
  • Participate in strategic technology planning and infrastructure modernization efforts.
  • Provide after-hours support during critical incidents, emergencies, and maintenance activities. Ability to sit, stand, and transport self from building to building Ability to kneel, crawl, climb, and twist for purposes of installing and maintaining equipment Preference may be given to candidates with knowledge or experience in:
  • Enterprise infrastructure and data center operations
  • Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure administration
  • Virtualization and high-availability environments
  • Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft 365 environments
  • Active Directory, Azure AD, and enterprise identity management
  • Backup, replication, and disaster recovery technologies
  • Cybersecurity practices, vulnerability management, and compliance standards
  • Infrastructure monitoring, performance optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Public safety and mission-critical operational systems
  • Automation, scripting, and systems integration
  • Storage systems and enterprise backup platforms
  • VMware, Hyper-V, and hybrid infrastructure environments
  • CJIS security compliance and operational continuity practices
Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Information Security, Computer Science, or a related degree plus four years of management experience in a related field is required, or a Master's Degree plus two years of management experience in a related field is required. Six years of experience may be substituted for the Bachelor's/Master's degree requirement.
  • Minimum six (6) to eight (8) years of virtualized data center environment and advanced enterprise systems administration experience.
  • Extensive experience supporting enterprise infrastructure, on-prem and on cloud services, virtualization platforms, backup and recovery systems, and mission-critical operational environments preferred.
  • LAN/WAN networking, routing and switching design, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Active Directory/LDAP user and group administration
  • Group Policy design and configuration
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
Preferred certifications may include:
  • Nutanix Certified Professional (NCP-MCI) or Advanced Professional (NCM-MCI)
Microsoft Certified:
Administrator Expert or Identity and Access Administrator Associate or Endpoint
  • Administrator Associate
  • Rubrik Certified System Administrator
  • CompTIA Server+
