Job Description

Who we are Today, AI is something you rent. Alpaca is building the full stack of hardware, software, models, and applications together to make it something you own. We are developing a new computer architecture that breaks the economics keeping frontier models trapped in datacenters. On top of that, we're building a platform of models, applications, and services that give that hardware meaning. Personal AI is moving from the datacenter to the desk, and we are driving that change. Our team is based in Cambridge, MA. About the role We want to bring our technology to market by building applications and services that make AI genuinely useful for businesses and individuals. Our hardware will make powerful AI models available, but the software we build will determine what people can actually do with them. We are looking for product-minded software engineers who can take these new capabilities and turn them into useful, intuitive applications. You'll work closely with customers, engineers, and designers to understand how people work, identify where AI can make a meaningful difference, and build the tools, agents, and automations that make it happen. This is a role for someone who enjoys both figuring out what to build and actually building it. You should be comfortable working across the stack, developing interfaces, integrating AI models with existing software, and taking products from an initial idea to something people can rely on. What you'll do Build AI products: Develop applications, agents, assistants, and automations that turn our local models into useful products.
Create great experiences:
Design and implement polished, intuitive interfaces that make complex AI capabilities simple and enjoyable to use.
Engineer the platform:
Build frontend and backend systems, APIs, integrations, and tools that connect our models to users' applications and workflows. Experiment with
AI:
Explore new models, agent frameworks, harnesses, and techniques to unlock new capabilities and improve existing ones.
Own the product:
W ork directly with users to identify opportunities, take ideas from prototype to production, and continuously improve what you build. Who we're looking for Strong engineering fundamentals: Experience rapidly building and shipping software with TypeScript, React, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, or similar technologies.
AI engineering experience:
Deep familiarity with LLMs, agents, tool calling, harness design, and modern AI development tools. You've built real applications using these technologies.
Full-stack flexibility:
Comfortable developing interfaces, backend services, APIs, and integrations, and solving problems across unfamiliar systems.
A strong eye for design:
Experience with UI/UX and a genuine interest in building beautiful, polished, and intuitive software.
Good product judgment:
You can understand ambiguous user needs, identify what matters, and turn complex problems into simple, useful products.
Technical curiosity:
You stay current with AI research and tooling, enjoy experimenting with new ideas, and can quickly turn promising techniques into working software. You have a genuine passion for the field, spending your free time doing things like watching Fireship videos.
Independence and communication:
You take ownership, move quickly with minimal direction, and collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and customers. How to apply Send us your resume, Github, and some projects you have worked on, along with a short note about why Alpaca interests you. More than credentials, we want to see what you've made, researched, designed, or shipped. If the role sounds like you but your background is unconventional, apply anyway.
