Brighton, MI We are seeking a highly technical and detail-oriented Applications Engineer to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will serve as the critical technical bridge between our clients, sales team, and production floor. You will be responsible for evaluating customer RFQs (Requests for Quotes) , analyzing 3D CAD models , and determining the most efficient manufacturing feasibility using CNC machining, 3D printing (additive manufacturing) , and other rapid prototyping technologies. The ideal candidate possesses strong engineering fundamentals, deep knowledge of digital fabrication processes, and excellent communication skills to guide customers from initial design concepts to physical prototypes.
Key Responsibilities RFQ & Cost Estimation:
Review and analyze incoming customer RFQs, 2D drawings, and 3D CAD models to assess manufacturing feasibility, material requirements, and production times. Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Conduct detailed DFM reviews for CNC machining (milling/turning) and 3D printing (polymer/metal). Identify potential manufacturing issues and proactively suggest design optimizations to clients to improve part quality and reduce costs.
Process Selection:
Determine the optimal manufacturing method (subtractive vs. additive vs. hybrid) based on customer specifications, tolerances, volume, and lead times.
Technical Consultation:
Serve as the technical point of contact for clients and the internal sales team, answering complex engineering questions regarding tolerances, surface finishes, and material properties.
Quoting & Routing:
Generate accurate cost estimates, cycle times, and operational routings using internal ERP/quoting software.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with CNC programmers, 3D printing technicians, and quality engineering to ensure successful transition from a won quote to a physical prototype.
Required Qualifications & Skills Education:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent hands-on industry experience).
Experience:
2-5 years of experience in a manufacturing plant, machine shop, or rapid prototyping environment.
CAD/CAM Proficiency:
Hands-on experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or Fusion 360 and the ability to interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Technical Knowledge:
Deep understanding of multi-axis CNC machining capabilities and industrial 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA, SLS, DMLS, etc.).
Analytical Skills:
Strong mathematical aptitude for calculating material volumes, machining cycle times, and cost structures.
Communication:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical constraints to non-technical stakeholders. Application Question(s): Do you have 3D printer experience?
