Job Description

About Southern Electrical Equipment Company (SEECO): SEECO was founded in 1920 when several engineers left Duke Power to create a new "start-up" company, with the intent to design and manufacture better products for their industry. They succeeded. That same drive to deliver greater performance and reliability is what animates our engineers, staff, and management today. Our ongoing product development efforts have been a key growth factor for SEECO, producing innovative and commercially successful products, such as unitized transmission switches, line post sensors for transmission switching automation applications, single bottle and multi-bottle vacuum interrupters, and single and variable speed electro-mechanical motor operators. Position Summary We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team specializing in high-voltage switchgear and substation equipment. This position is ideal for an engineer with 2-5 years of experience in manufacturing who enjoys solving technical challenges, collaborating with customers, and designing solutions for customer applications. The successful candidate will work closely with our sales, manufacturing, and production teams to develop new products, improve existing designs, and provide engineering support throughout the manufacturing process. This role requires strong mechanical design skills, the ability to interpret engineering drawings, and excellent communication with both internal teams and customers. Unlike a traditional design role, this position also includes periodic travel to customer sites to support equipment installation, troubleshoot mechanical issues, evaluate product performance, and implement engineering improvements in the field. Primary Responsibilities Design and modify switchgear assemblies and components using CAD (Solidworks). Create detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation. Interpret customer specifications, drawings, and project requirements to develop manufacturable designs. Communicate directly with customers to clarify technical requirements and resolve design questions. Support manufacturing by troubleshooting production issues and implementing design improvements. Review and maintain engineering drawings to ensure compliance with company and industry standards. Assist in developing standardized designs and configurable product families to improve engineering efficiency. Collaborate with production, purchasing, quality, and applications teams throughout the product lifecycle. Travel to customer facilities (typically 1-2 trips per month) to support product installation, inspect equipment, troubleshoot field issues, and recommend engineering improvements. Make engineering adjustments and design modifications based on field observations and customer feedback. Maintain accurate documentation within engineering and document management systems.
