POSITION SUMMARY
The FileMaker Pro Developer is responsible for the design, maintenance, optimization, and ongoing enhancement of IEM's custom FileMaker Pro-based Student and School Information System (SIS), supporting IEM and its partner schools. This role collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into secure, scalable, and high-performing database solutions. The developer works within a multi-user hosted environment and is accountable for system reliability, data integrity, performance tuning, and continuous improvement of application architecture. The position requires strong technical expertise in relational database design, FileMaker Pro development tools, scripting, integrations, and deployment practices. This position combines technical application development and stakeholder collaboration in support of the organization's Mission and Guiding Principles.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and enhance existing FileMaker Pro application, ensuring system stability, performance, and data integrity in a hosted FileMaker Server environment.
  • Develop and deploy new features, modules, and system enhancements based on documented requirements and stakeholder feedback.
  • Maintain relational database schemas, including table relationships, indexing strategies, privilege sets, and security models.
  • Develop and maintain scripts, calculations, custom functions, layouts, and UI components following development best practices.
  • Integrate third-party systems and services using APIs, XML, SQL, ODBC/JDBC, web services, plugins, and data connectors.
  • Participate in requirements gathering, define acceptance criteria, estimate effort, and contribute to project planning and delivery schedules.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement changes.
  • Contribute to system documentation and technical specifications.
  • Support business process review and redesign initiatives through system enhancements and automation.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent development tasks to ensure timely project completion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope and level of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of hands-on experience developing relational database solutions in FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Server.
Additional Requirements:
  • Strong understanding of relational database architecture, normalization principles, and data modeling.
  • Experience with FileMaker scripting, calculations, custom functions, and UI/UX layout design.
  • Proficiency in XML, SQL, and data integration methodologies.
  • Experience deploying and supporting solutions in FileMaker Server environments.
  • Experience integrating third-party plugins and external systems.
  • Proficient in both macOS and Windows environments.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proven record of integrity, collegiality, and collaboration in working with colleagues at all levels.
  • Must be self-directed and have the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and complete assignments within established time frames.
  • Communication skills (written and oral) to clearly, effectively, and respectfully interact with diverse individuals; secure and/or provide information to clarify situations and resolve problems.
  • Analytical/problem-solving skills to break down complex problems into component parts, make logical conclusions, and take appropriate actions. Recognize trends, key actions, and underlying issues.
  • Proven ability to assess issues and situations beyond 'face value' and the ability to probe beyond routine questions, identify, and resolve discrepancies in information.
  • Proficient with email software, web applications, enterprise software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
Physical Demands:
Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, and hearing in a standard office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, with the ability to adjust focus. May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25-50 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
