Java Play Full Stack Developer Location New York, NY 10016 Date Posted March 10, 2026 Job ID 14283 Employment Type Contract Scion Technology has been engaged to conduct a search for an experienced Java Play Developer for our client, a nonprofit technology company out of New York! This is a 100% remote contract position with preference for candidates in the Eastern Time Zone.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Play a pivotal role in modernizing and maintaining the legacy platform while its functionalities are gracefully sunsetted and integrated into a broader ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with technical leadership and stakeholders, utilizing your full stack expertise to deliver quick wins and ensure platform stability during a critical transition phase. RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and maintain backend services using Java and Play Framework, ensuring stability and scalability Build responsive, high-performance front-end components with React, utilizing hooks and modern best practices Design and optimize RESTful APIs and SQL queries for relational databases like MySQL Implement security measures such as OAuth and JWT; troubleshoot and resolve production platform issues Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate requirements into technical solutions and support platform sunset efforts

QUALIFICATIONS

5+ years of full stack development experience with strong Java and Play Framework expertise Proficiency in React (hooks, functional components) and SQL database optimization Experience with RESTful API design, version control (GitHub Actions), and cloud environments (AWS preferred) Familiarity with security protocols (OAuth, JWT) and legacy code patterns, with a focus on performance and reliability Experience with real-time communication protocols (WebSockets, Socket.io) a plus Experience working on high-traffic, transactional, or mission-critical platforms preferred

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
