Software Engineer Job Description This Software Engineer role offers the opportunity to contribute to both long-standing satellite programs and newer space systems. You will join a cross-functional development team to design, develop, and maintain high-quality software solutions, focusing on reliability, performance, and secure best practices. The position involves working with modern tools and technologies, including containerization, cloud platforms, and build automation, while collaborating closely with peers through code reviews and shared documentation. Responsibilities Design, develop, troubleshoot, and debug software to support enhancements and new product features in a web-based, full-stack environment. Implement and maintain high-quality code using Java, C, and C++ for multi-threaded or real-time applications. Create and maintain unit tests to ensure code quality, reliability, and coverage across new and existing features. Produce clear, comprehensive software documentation for internal stakeholders and end users, including design details and usage guidance. Develop and support software running in containerized and Kubernetes-based environments, including integration with Docker and related orchestration tools. Integrate applications with RESTful services and ensure robust, scalable, and secure communication between components. Contribute to build pipeline automation and software packaging using tools such as Bamboo to streamline continuous integration and delivery. Collaborate within a SAFe Agile environment, participating in planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives using tools such as Jira and Confluence. Work with cloud-based environments, leveraging general knowledge of AWS or Azure to support deployment and operations. Support secure software development practices, including implementation of security best practices where applicable. Assist in troubleshooting production or integration issues, particularly in satellite command and control or other mission-critical systems when applicable. Essential Skills 2-7 years of relevant programming experience in software development. Strong software development experience in Java, C, and C++. Experience with multi-threaded or real-time applications. General knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes. Experience coding in a Kubernetes environment. Experience with RESTful services. Basic understanding of web-based technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Experience with build pipeline automation and packaging using tools such as Bamboo. General cloud knowledge with platforms such as AWS or Azure. Familiarity with working in a SAFe Agile environment. Experience using Atlassian tools such as Jira and Confluence or similar collaboration tools. Experience using Jira for task and issue tracking. Ability to create and maintain unit tests to ensure high-quality code delivery. Ability to participate effectively in code reviews and provide clear, constructive feedback. Comfort working in a Linux environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with QuestDB. Experience developing unit tests with tools such as SonarQube or other code coverage tools. Expert-level knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and Rancher. Secure software development experience and implementation of security best practices. Experience with satellite command and control systems. Experience working with web-based full-stack solutions in an Agile environment. Familiarity with additional collaboration tools beyond Atlassian, where applicable. Work Environment The role is based in a hybrid work setting, requiring on-site presence two days per week in Lanham, with a planned move to College Park. You will work as part of a cross-functional Agile development team focused on satellite programs, including stable systems that have operated for more than 20 years and newer satellite initiatives. The technical environment includes Linux-based systems, containerization with Docker, orchestration with Kubernetes and Rancher, build automation with tools such as Bamboo, and collaboration through the Atlassian suite (Jira and Confluence). You will engage in a SAFe Agile framework with regular ceremonies and close coordination across engineering disciplines, contributing to mission-critical, space-related software in a professional and highly collaborative setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lanham, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $160000.00/hr.
