What you'll do As a Software Team Lead, you will guide a high-performing agile team building a software defined networking platform designed to enable scalable, resilient, and intelligent connectivity across distributed systems. You'll play a dual role as both a technical leader and people manager - mentoring engineers, crafting how work is carried out, and ensuring delivery of high-quality, scalable software. This is an opportunity to lead from the front: influencing technical direction while empowering your team to consistently deliver impactful software. The day-to-day Lead an agile-scrum team operating in regular sprint cycles, driving consistent, predictable delivery
Run sprint ceremonies including planning, daily standups, backlog grooming, and retrospectives
Partner with collaborators and software management to prioritize work and define sprint commitments
Serve as the direct supervisor for team members, including:
o Conducting regular one-on-ones
o Providing coaching and mentorship
o Supporting career growth and goal setting
o Delivering performance evaluations
Contribute hands-on to development efforts across the stack as needed
Review team code and designs, providing actionable feedback to maintain high engineering standards
Ensure strong software quality through unit testing, code reviews, and alignment with established guidelines
Collaborate across fields (software, test, systems, and product teams) to deliver coordinated solutions
Drive continuous improvement in development processes, automated deployment workflows, and team efficiency This will initially be an on-site role based in Carlsbad, CA; the role could evolve into a hybrid role (Onsite 3 days per week) What you'll need Proven experience leading or mentoring software engineers in an agile development
environment
Strong experience with agile-scrum methodologies
A minimum of 5 years of software development experience
Proficiency with at least one of:
o Python (backend/middle-layer development)
o C/C++ (low-level or performance-sensitive networking components)
o React with TypeScript (frontend applications)
Experience building APIs using REST and/or gRPC
Familiarity with development and collaboration tools:
o Jira for task tracking
o GitHub for source control
o CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
o Code quality platforms (SonarQube or similar)
Experience developing on or for Linux systems (Debian preferred)
Strong understanding of software quality practices, including unit testing and code
reviews
Ability to balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities
Strong communication skills and ability to align team efforts with broader organizational goals
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar field, or equivalent experience
Government position, US Citizenship required
Ability to obtain and maintain a US Secret Clearance is required #LI-BBS What will help you on the job Prior experience with networking products
Familiarity with cloud-connected or hybrid edge/cloud architectures
Knowledge of networking concepts (routing, tunneling, reliability, fault tolerance)
Experience scaling agile teams and improving engineering processes
Experience optimizing CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows
Strong debugging and performance analysis skills in distributed environments
Demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative, high-trust team culture Salary range $140,500.00 - $221,500.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $174,000.00- $261,000.00/ annually At Viasat, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
