Software Development Manager, AWS EC2 GW Networking

DescriptionAs a Software Development Manager in the AWS EC2 Gateway Networking Organization, you will build next-generation software-defined networking infrastructure at scale. Your team delivers network function virtualization capabilities that power customer-facing products including NAT Gateway, Network Load Balancer, Private Link, and Gateway Load Balancer, while driving the architecture evolution toward a more scalable and cost-effective platform. We are now designing and building the next generation systems capable of handling massive amounts of data per day, and growing from there. This is a unique opportunity to innovate and build some of the world's most resilient large-scale systems from the ground up. You will partner with VPC, Lambda, S3, and other AWS services to deliver features, improve availability and cost, and operate at extraordinary scale. In this role, you'll provide technical leadership, solve complex software problems, and make strategic trade-offs between short-term and long-term results. You'll think in terms of architecture, not just code, while leading the migration from legacy systems to next-generation infrastructure that meets growing customer demands. This hands-on position requires broad engineering competence and technical knowledge of network function virtualization, data plane development, DevOps, continuous integration, infrastructure tools, and distributed systems. You'll lead a dataplane development team to design and deliver the next-generation network state store service — a highly scalable, available, and durable platform usable by any compute workload running in AWS that requires network state tracking. • Lead and manage a team of software engineers building next-generation software-defined networking infrastructure for AWS at scale
• Drive technical strategy and architecture decisions for data plane software supporting EC2 Hyperplane Networking services
• Partner with VPC, S3, Lambda, DDB, Private Links, and other AWS services to deliver features that improve availability, cost, and scale
• Make strategic trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term architectural goals while maintaining operational excellence
• Own the full software development lifecycle including design, development, testing, deployment, and operations of high-availability distributed systems
• Build and scale a high-performing engineering team through hiring top talent, mentoring engineers, and developing future leaders
• Establish and drive engineering best practices for DevOps, continuous integration, and infrastructure automation
• Influence cross-functional teams and senior leadership to align on priorities and deliver customer-focused solutions
• Monitor and improve system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency for networking services operating at AWS scale

About the team AWS HyperPlane provides stateful Layer 3 and Layer 4 rewrite capabilities of network packets which can be composed together to build network products and appliances. The dataplane team owns the core packet processing path and is currently driving a platform evolution — migrating from legacy architecture to a next-generation system built for higher scalability, multi-tenancy, and cost efficiency using native instances. This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every three months. We work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don't get paged for the same issue twice.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of engineering team management experience
• 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
• 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
• Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
• Experience partnering with product or program management teamsPreferred Qualifications
• Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
