Job Description

High-Level Summary The Software Test Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, testing, and debugging of software used in test infrastructure supporting the characterization of embeddedcomponents and systems. Working alongside senior engineers, this engineer will participate in test system design, firmware development, and automated testing, while contributing to aerospace and high-reliability engineering projects. Structured Description Position Overview This role supports software development activities for electronic test systems, embedded systems, and test equipment used in radiation effects testing. The Software Test Engineer will assist with test case development, test software design and implementation, code review, hardware integration, debugging, and automation of testing activities. Key Responsibilities Support development of automated test software, engineering tools, and software infrastructure. Assist with development and maintenance of software for automated test fixtures, laboratory equipment, and embedded test systems. Develop scripts to automate programmable instruments like digital oscilloscopes, DC power supplies, function generators, and digital multimeters. Utilize industry-standard protocols and libraries including SCPI (Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments), VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture), and PyVISA. Collaborate with hardware, test, and radiation engineers to support system validation and troubleshooting. Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions. Practice software engineering best practices, including version control, testing, and documentation of code artifacts and test systems. Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field. Experience with programming in C or C++ through coursework, personal projects, research, or internships. Basic understanding of software development principles and debugging techniques. Familiarity with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or low-level software concepts. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary engineering team. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Skills 1-3 years of experience in embedded system design, firmware development, electronics testing, and automation scripting. Proficiency in Python or other scripting languages. Exposure to communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, or USB. Familiarity with embedded architectures and frameworks, such as STM32, Arduino, MSP430, PIC. Experience interfacing with embedded components through firmware, such as sensors, PMICs, transceivers, and memories (EEPROM, NOR Flash, SRAM). Familiarity with various testing methodologies. Proficient in designing test cases for verifying hardware functionality that were repeatable, auditable, and logged data for review. Familiarity with Git or other version control systems. Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, or other laboratory equipment. Interest in aerospace, avionics, embedded systems, or high-reliability electronics. Additional Requirements This is an on-site role based in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Compensation The expected salary range for this position is $68,000 - $110,000. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
