In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. Department staff are working to achieve this goal in collaboration with educators at all levels of student development, from early childhood through higher education, and in partnership with families, businesses and community organizations. Job Summary Job Summary The Orange County Department of Education is seeking a skilled and collaborative UI/UX Designer to lead the design of a modern payroll and HR system that will replace a legacy platform. This role will play a critical part in transforming complex payroll and HR processes into intuitive, user-friendly experiences for stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings a strong balance of design expertise, business understanding, and technical collaboration—along with experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to enhance design workflows and outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Orange County Department of Education is seeking a skilled and collaborative UI/UX Designer to lead the design of a modern payroll and HR system that will replace a legacy platform. This role will play a critical part in transforming complex payroll and HR processes into intuitive, user-friendly experiences for stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings a strong balance of design expertise, business understanding, and technical collaboration—along with experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to enhance design workflows and outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead UX/UI Design for ERP System
  • Design user-centered interfaces for a new enterprise payroll solution, replacing a legacy system.
  • Translate complex payroll and HR workflows into streamlined, intuitive user experiences. Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Payroll and HR business units to understand requirements, pain points, and compliance needs.
  • Work alongside software analysts, developers, and IT teams to align design with technical feasibility. Facilitation & Communication
  • Lead design workshops, requirements sessions, and usability reviews.
  • Present design concepts, prototypes, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Design Execution

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience designing enterprise applications (ERP, HRIS, Payroll, or similar systems preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, or similar
  • Experience creating: o Wireframes and prototypes o User journeys and workflows o Design documentation for development teams
  • Demonstrated ability to: o Lead meetings and design discussions o Present concepts to stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience collaborating with technical IT teams
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing payroll, HR, or financial systems
  • Familiarity with compliance-driven workflows (e.g., payroll regulations, auditing requirements)
  • Hands-on experience using AI tools for design, such as: o Generative design assistants o AI-powered user research tools o Automated prototyping or accessibility tools

Before the Department will finalize an offer of employment, the candidate selected will be required to show original documents which establish both the individual's identity and employment authorization. The candidate must also sign a statement under penalty of perjury regarding his/her employability.
