Join the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club (TEHCC) for their monthly Hiking with Tools event. This month's event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 19 from 9:30 am - 2:00 pm in Roan Mountain, TN.This is a great introduction to giving back to the Appalachian Trail by helping out with routine maintenance. All tools and protective gear are provided and no prior experience needed. Hands-on training will be provided. Volunteers will meet at Roan Mountain Community Park and carpool to Bitter End. We will hike north and do trail maintenance for approximately 1.7 miles to the lunch and turnaround spot, Hardcore Cascades. Trail maintenance opportunities begin almost as soon as we enter the forest. There is encroaching vegetation, mostly rhododendrons and some overhanging branches, and a fire ring that needs to be disassembled along this section. Also, there are a few blazes that need to be refreshed with white paint. Participants should wear long pants and sturdy boots/shoes. As a reminder, here are a few items to bring in a daypack: work gloves and hard hat, if you have them (otherwise they will be provided) plenty of drinking water lunch appropriate work clothes (pants are recommended) and sturdy boots/shoes appropriate clothing for cold and changing mountain weather, including rain gear Keep an eye on the weather in case we have to cancel.
