In this vital role, you will be responsible for safely operating various types of vehicles, including school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vans, to transport passengers efficiently and securely. Your commitment to safety, excellent customer service, and adherence to traffic laws will ensure a positive experience for all riders. This paid position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in community transportation while working in a dynamic and supportive environment. Duties Safely operate commercial vehicles such as school buses, transit buses, and vans following all federal, state, and local transportation safety regulations. Transport passengers—including students, seniors, and individuals with disabilities—while ensuring their safety and comfort at all times. Assist passengers with wheelchair boarding and disembarking, providing wheelchair assistance as needed. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid protocols when necessary. Maintain clear communication with dispatchers and passengers using effective English or bilingual communication skills to provide updates or address concerns. Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure they are in optimal condition and report any maintenance issues promptly. Respond quickly to traffic changes or road hazards by adjusting routes safely while maintaining punctuality. Enforce student discipline policies when applicable and manage passenger behavior professionally to ensure a safe environment. Complete detailed logs of trips, incidents, and vehicle inspections accurately and promptly. Uphold all transportation safety regulations, vehicle codes, traffic laws, and school policies during daily operations. Skills Proven experience in bus driving, school bus driving, or transit bus operation with a strong understanding of commercial driving standards. Knowledge of transportation safety regulations including traffic laws, vehicle codes, emergency stop procedures, and heavy lifting techniques. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly in English; multilingual abilities are a plus. Familiarity with student discipline strategies and behavior management techniques. Ability to respond quickly to traffic changes or emergencies with calmness and professionalism. Experience working with children or seniors is highly desirable for understanding passenger needs. Basic first aid certification including CPR training; knowledge of emergency response procedures for transportation incidents is essential. Strong communication skills for effective interaction with passengers, colleagues, and emergency responders. Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting or assisting passengers with mobility aids safely. Knowledge of school policies related to student conduct and transportation safety regulations at the local and state levels.
