Days Schedule:
1-3 days per week, generally 1:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (hours vary based on athletic and extracurricular schedules) Position Summary The Activity Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students, coaches, faculty, and other authorized personnel to and from athletic contests, field trips, and extracurricular activities. The driver is responsible for operating the school bus in accordance with all federal, state, and school regulations while maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment for all passengers. Essential ResponsibilitiesVehicle Safety & Operation Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections before and after each trip. Inspect brakes, steering, lights, mirrors, emergency exits, warning systems, tires, and other safety equipment. Operate the school bus safely under all driving and weather conditions. Follow all federal, state, local, and school transportation regulations. Maintain assigned schedules while placing student safety above timeliness. Report mechanical problems or safety concerns immediately. Return the bus to its designated parking location and secure it after each trip. Student Transportation Transport students, coaches, and staff safely to athletic events, field trips, and extracurricular activities. Pick up and discharge only authorized passengers at approved locations. Ensure all passengers remain seated and follow safety rules while the bus is in motion. Maintain appropriate student discipline and report disciplinary concerns to school administration. Ensure that seat belts are in use when equipped. Maintain an assigned seating chart when required. Safety & Emergency Procedures Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required. Respond appropriately during emergencies and safely evacuate passengers if necessary. Report accidents immediately and complete all required documentation. Contact emergency personnel when necessary and assist injured individuals until help arrives. Secure wheelchairs, car seats, or other required restraint systems when applicable. Bus Care & Maintenance Keep the assigned bus clean and presentable. Monitor heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for passenger comfort. Report damage, maintenance needs, or unsafe operating conditions promptly. Professional Responsibilities Participate in all required meetings and training sessions. Maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Submit to required drug and alcohol testing. Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and positive customer service with students, parents, coaches, and staff. Model respect, integrity, and nondiscriminatory practices in all interactions. Additional Duties Report safety violations or concerns involving employees or equipment. Exercise sound judgment and responsible leadership during overnight or out-of-town trips. Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Operations or Transportation Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications Applicants must:
Possess a high school diploma or GED. Hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required school bus and passenger endorsements, or obtain one before completing required training. Have an excellent driving record. Successfully complete all required school transportation training. Meet all Virginia Department of Education and Department of Transportation requirements. Pass all required drug and alcohol screenings. Pass required physical examinations for school bus drivers. Successfully complete criminal background checks, fingerprinting, and TB screening. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, coaches, and staff. Maintain student discipline while ensuring safe vehicle operation. Work independently and follow both written and verbal instructions. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Successful candidates should demonstrate: Thorough knowledge of safe school bus operation. Strong defensive driving skills. Knowledge of traffic laws and CDL regulations. Ability to remain calm during emergencies. Excellent judgment and decision-making abilities. Ability to safely transport students during daytime, evening, and night travel. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to student safety and customer service. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Sit for extended periods while driving. Use foot and hand controls continuously. Bend, kneel, climb, and reach as necessary. Push or pull up to 50 pounds during emergency evacuations. Assist students during emergencies. Enter and exit the bus using all available emergency exits. Meet required vision standards, including: Distance vision Close vision Peripheral vision Color vision Night/dusk vision Working Conditions The Activity Bus Driver regularly works: Inside a school bus during varying weather conditions. During afternoons, evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight trips. Around traffic, loud noise, vibrations, and diesel fumes. During athletic events, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
