The School Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school, school-related activities, and special excursions. This position ensures the bus is maintained in safe operating condition and that students are supervised appropriately during loading, transport, and unloading. The Bus Driver reports directly to the Director of Transportation.REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience with a valid driver's license required. Must hold a valid Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a school bus and passenger endorsement issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, drug and alcohol testing, and tuberculosis screening. Must meet all driving record requirements and maintain plus points on your DMV record, background investigation, CPR certification, and physical requirements mandated by Manassas Park City Schools and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, including railroad-crossing procedures. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English; Spanish language proficiency is a plus. Ability to perform moderate lifting of 50lbs and assist students on and off the bus, including those using mobility devices. Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and respond appropriately. Demonstrated patience, professionalism, and ability to maintain student discipline. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and administrators. Willingness and ability to work split shifts (approximately 6:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) on all school days.ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
(including but not limited to the following) Transports passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner. Monitors students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and ensure compliance with district policies. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, etc.) to ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition and to comply with mandated guidelines. Advises students and other passengers regarding appropriate behavior to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety. Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and/or potential emergency situations (e.g., road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) and resolves the situation and/or recommends appropriate resolutions. Assists students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses during both normal transport and emergency situations. Attends meetings, classroom training, behind-the-wheel training, safety meetings, in-service sessions, administrative conferences, etc., to maintain skills and meet school bus driver certification requirements. Conducts emergency evacuation drills to ensure efficiency of procedures and compliance with mandated requirements. Responds to inquiries (e.g., from students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) to provide information and/or direction. Secures students as assigned (e.g., car seats, wheelchairs, restraints, etc.) to ensure their safety during transport. Assists children with disabilities on and off the bus. Assists with snow removal on and around buses to ensure buses maintain established schedules. Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, to ensure vehicle safety, appearance, and sanitation. Lifts students and/or equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, seat belts, etc.) to position or reposition students as appropriate. Is responsible for the safe transportation of students by demonstrating full knowledge of defensive driving techniques and a complete understanding of the laws of the road. Maintains continuous awareness of student safety and maintains order and discipline on the bus by issuing referrals and bus conduct reports to school principals as necessary. Assists other drivers with student transportation or covers additional routes as operational needs arise. Before the first bus run of the day, performs a required walk-around inspection of the bus and reports all issues to the Fleet Maintenance Coordinator and Transportation Director or designee. Performs routine operator care of the bus, including refueling, checking oil, washing the bus, sweeping and maintaining a clean interior, checking equipment, reporting defects, and taking the bus for regularly scheduled maintenance. Monitors road conditions and reports any safety concerns to the Director of Transportation or designee. Communicates via two-way radio with the Director of Transportation or designee, schools, and other bus drivers as required. Attends all required meetings related to the position and submits all daily reports as requested by the Director of Transportation. Reports all bus accidents immediately to local law enforcement and the Director of Transportation or designee and assists students as needed. When assigned to daily, overnight, or weekend field trips, is responsible for directions to the destination, parking, bus safety while away from the site, and conducting oneself in a professional manner while representing the school system. Performs other duties as assigned.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to effectively communicate and interact with staff, students, families, and the public through verbal, written, and electronic means. Duties require the ability to see, read, hear, speak, handle, and feel objects and controls. Physical requirements include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and performing repetitive motions. The employee must possess sufficient strength and agility to safely move, lift, and secure students in child safety restraint systems and to assist students with entering and exiting the bus during both routine operations and emergency situations. The driver must be able to perform required emergency evacuation procedures, including entering and exiting the school bus as necessary. The position also requires the ability to perform moderate lifting, operate a wheelchair lift, and assist students on and off the bus as needed. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to adjust focus and distinguish colors. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including wet, humid, hot, and cold environments. The employee may also be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, minor vibration, and noise levels that are typically moderate to loud.CLEARANCES
