A Courier or Messenger provides fast delivery of documents and packages to locations within a city, or provides customized long distance or international deliveries. Makes deliveries traveling by bicycle, van, truck, or plane.
The purpose of this classification is to drive and operate a van to transport senior citizens to and from the senior center and to deliver meals to Meals on Wheel program participants.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Operates a van to transport senior citizens to and from the senior center: reviews route sheet and schedule; plans and organizes daily trip routes; makes adjustments to planned routes/schedules due to traffic congestion, accidents, or other situations; picks up and returns passengers from and to assigned locations; assists passengers and their packages and medical equipment into or out of vehicle.; operates motorized wheelchair lift; secures wheelchairs, walkers and other items during transport;. Delivers meals to Meals on Wheels program participants: reviews delivery sheet; determines and drives route; delivers coolers and meals to designated locations and individuals; ensures meals and cold food items remain at temperatures in compliance with food safety standards; accounts for meals delivered and not delivered in accordance with program guidelines; advises appropriate staff of undelivered meals or concerns regarding client well-being; and maintains daily records. Maintains food storage areas and related equipment: cleans and stores coolers; organizes, cleans, and maintains the food storage surfaces and areas; and ensures activities comply with food safety and program rules, regulations, and standards. Follows established safety procedures and traffic laws: performs driving functions safely in various weather conditions; monitors traffic conditions surrounding van to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicle in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicle, checking fluid levels, cleaning/sanitizing interior of van, washing/cleaning exterior of van, etc.; monitors operations to maintain efficiency and safety and reports faulty equipment; and Newton County, Georgia Van Driver schedules/coordinates periodic maintenance work. Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: prepares, completes, receives, reviews, processes, forwards or retains, as appropriate, various forms, reports, vehicle inspection and maintenance logs, rider logs, meal reports, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records. Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in customer service, passenger vehicle operation or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification Required:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s).
