Monday - Friday, 11 AM - 7:30 PM. MEDIC Regional Blood Center is a community blood bank located in Knoxville, TN. We are the primary provider of blood and blood products for 24 hospitals in 22 counties throughout parts of East Tennessee and Southeastern Kentucky. If you're from the area, you've likely seen our buses out and about in the community on our mobile blood drives. We are proud to also have other fixed collection sites in Farragut, Athens, and Crossville. There's a lot that goes into collecting, processing, and distributing blood. Check out the process below and continue reading to learn how this open position plays a part in the lifesaving work we do every day!

Stage One:

Donating

• Demographic and general donor information is collected.
• Medical history questionnaire is completed and key vital signs are obtained.
• Feel the "big stick!" and begin the donation.
• Multiple test tubes are collected and received by the Processing Lab to be sent for testing.
• All done!

Now it's relax and snack time.

Stage Two:

Processing & Manufacturing

• Whole blood consists of red cells, white cells, plasma, and platelets, so it's spun in centrifuges to separate it into transfusable components.
• Plasma may be processed into different products after being separated from other components.
• Red cells and platelets are leuko-reduced which involves the removal of white cells.
• Each component is now its own transfusable product!

Stage Three:

Storage & Distribution

• Once test results confirm the product is suitable for transfusion, products are labeled.
• Products are stored at their required temperatures until time to ship to a hospital.
• Hospitals can receive blood 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, typically on a standard distribution schedule, but they can order what they need at any time, day or night.
• The blood, plasma, or platelets are now in the hands of the hospital to save a patient's life!
