After his father's death, Samson clings to a story his mother, Sonya, once told him under a willow tree: that his father has wings now and can fly. Desperate to feel close to him again, Samson becomes consumed by the idea of flight. When his grandmother, Maddy, arrives to support the grieving family, Samson enlists her in building a pair of wings, pulling her into his fragile dream. As Sonya tries to protect him from heartbreak by grounding him in reality, Maddy forces her to confront what's truly more dangerous: the possibility of falling, or a life spent never believing in flight at all.
