POSITION SUMMARY

The Locomotive Operator / Rail Conductor is responsible for the safe movement, switching, spotting and staging of railcars throughout Tidewater's Steubenville terminal. The position performs ground and conductor duties and, when trained, qualified and authorized, operates Tidewater locomotives in accordance with company operating rules and safety procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate locomotives during yard switching, railcar spotting and staging movements when qualified and authorized. Perform conductor and ground-person duties and direct locomotive movements using radio communication and established hand signals. Identify tracks, operate switches and derails, verify routes and maintain awareness of track capacity and clearance points. Couple and uncouple railcars and air hoses; apply and release hand brakes as required. Build, break down, stage and spot railcars according to daily operating requirements and switch lists. Maintain accurate car counts and railcar movement records and communicate car placement to terminal personnel. Perform required pre-movement inspections of locomotives, railcars, tracks, switches and related equipment; report defects or unsafe conditions promptly. Coordinate movements with the Lead, terminal operations personnel and connecting railroad crews. Follow company operating rules, track-protection procedures, blue-signal and derail requirements, and all applicable safety requirements. Perform light equipment inspections and minor adjustments within the employee's training and authorization. Maintain clean and orderly work areas and ensure yard debris is properly recycled or disposed of. Stop work when unsafe conditions exist, report hazards and assist with appropriate corrective action. Perform other terminal operating duties as assigned and within the employee's training and qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED. Valid driver's license. Ability to communicate clearly by radio and follow written and verbal operating instructions. Ability to work safely as part of a two-person or team switching operation. Basic ability to use email and company computer or tablet systems for operating records. Mechanical aptitude and ability to make minor equipment adjustments within training and authorization. Ability to pass required pre-employment screening, including substance abuse testing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two or more years of railroad, industrial switching or rail-yard experience. Previous experience as a conductor, brakeman, switchman or locomotive operator. Experience operating diesel-electric locomotives. Knowledge of railcar switching, air-brake systems and railroad operating practices. Bilingual English and Spanish communication skills are a plus.

PHYSICAL AND WORK REQUIREMENTS

Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around moving rail equipment, uneven surfaces, noise and industrial operations. Regularly walk on ballast, climb on and off rail equipment, operate hand brakes and switches, and bend, stoop, reach and maintain balance. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds and safely perform other physically demanding work throughout the shift. Work days, nights, weekends and holidays as operating requirements dictate. Wear required personal protective equipment and comply with all safety and operating procedures.
