Job Description:
Superintendent, Stevedore New Haven, CT
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Superintendent, Stevedore, provides expert guidance and direction to supervisors and lead associates at terminals and ports of entry, focusing on breakbulk cargo such as salt, lumber, and steel. This role involves planning daily work schedules, directing associates to ensure accurate, efficient, and timely delivery, maintaining proper inventory control, and responding promptly to customer requests. The Superintendent also oversees training related to facility and company policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Oversight :
Maintain disciplined control on all aspects of stevedoring operations, ensuring effective communication between management, supervision, and all production and support personnel.
Training and Development :
Identify training requirements and ensure all personnel possess technical job proficiency and a clear understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and performance goals.
Personnel Management :
Schedule and shift personnel to create efficient work teams, initiate cross-training to achieve productivity goals, and ensure proper documentation and records of associate performance and safety.
Performance Management :
Conduct performance evaluations, recommend pay changes, and initiate a progressive disciplinary process, including counseling and issuing oral and written warnings.
Safety and Compliance :
Ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, and security procedures, continuously inspect loading and unloading gear and equipment, and coordinate with the Port Captain or Cargo Officer on stowage, loading, and discharging operations.
Maintenance Coordination :
Initiate work orders and report maintenance needs for equipment and facilities.
Additional Responsibilities :
Assume various additional projects or tasks as necessary and perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Experience :
Proven experience handling and supervising associates on multiple types of cargo, especially breakbulk.
Technical Skills :
Ability to operate and train associates on multiple types of cranes and understand specialized rigging and cargo handling gear.
Communication :
Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions and directions.
Multitasking :
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with an excellent safety record.
Training and Motivation :
Capable of training new employees, motivating, and building morale within the team.
Supervisory Skills :
Ability to supervise, train, and hold associates accountable for performance and results.
Stevedoring Experience :
Extensive warehouse and stevedoring experience.
Licensing :
Must possess a valid driver's license and a 3-year driving history acceptable to our auto insurance carrier.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS
Risk Management :
Identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures. Regularly review and update safety protocols to ensure ongoing compliance.
Training and Supervision :
Provide comprehensive safety training for all personnel, including proper use of equipment, emergency procedures, and safe handling of cargo.
Equipment Inspections :
Conduct regular inspections of loading and unloading gear, cranes, and other equipment to ensure they meet safety standards.
Emergency Planning :
Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including first aid arrangements and procedures for dealing with accidents or hazardous situations.
Work Environment :
Ensure the working environment is safe, including proper lighting, ventilation, and clear access routes. Monitor weather conditions and manage risks associated with extreme weather. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) : Enforce the use of appropriate PPE, such as helmets, gloves, and safety vests, to protect workers from potential hazards.
Communication :
Maintain clear and effective communication channels to report safety concerns and incidents promptly.
STEVEDORING SKILL SETS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cargo Handling :
Expertise in loading, unloading, lashing, stowing, and securing various types of cargo, including hazardous materials.
Equipment Operation :
Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as port cranes, roll trailers, mafi trailers, reach stackers, and forklifts.
Specialized Rigging :
Knowledge of specialized rigging techniques and cargo handling gear to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Documentation :
Accurate documentation of cargo movements, inventory control, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Coordination :
Work closely with ship crews, port authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient cargo operations.
Problem-solving :
Ability to quickly address and resolve issues that arise during cargo handling operations.
Physical Stamina :
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving heavy objects. Attention to

Meticulous attention to detail to ensure cargo is handled safely and efficiently.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
"Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, handle objects, reach with hands and arms, and write, talk, type, and hear. The associate is occasionally required to sit, stoop, bend, kneel, and lift or move up to 50 lbs. The associate typically works in an office environment but frequently visits a warehouse or outdoor environment and is able to work days, nights, and weekends."
