  • Lake Charles Opening Date 06/24/2026 Closing Date 7/5/2026 11:59 PM Central About this Job Join the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) as a Ferryboat Deckhand on the Cameron Ferry, where you'll play a key role in safely loading and unloading vehicles and collecting tolls to support smooth and efficient ferry operations.
In this role, you'll assist passengers with professionalism and care, collect and record tolls, and support the safe operation of the vessel through routine safety checks, emergency preparedness, and active participation as a designated crew member in accordance with Coast Guard requirements.

Minimum Qualifications No experience or training is required.

Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties:
Assists patrons in a courteous and businesslike manner while performing routine manual work aboard a state-owned marine vessel. Collects and records tolls from boarding vehicles and/or pedestrians. Must be eligible for bond. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives. Under the general supervision of Marine Engineers, Marine Chief Engineers, Marine Pilots, Marine Operators or Marine Masters. Classifies vehicles and registers class and axles of each vehicle boarding the vessel, collects appropriate toll, process change and issues receipt. Completes vessel passenger and vehicle count sheets. Performs security and safety checks on vehicles boarding, while underway and departing the vessel. Serves as "Designated Member of the Crew" in accordance with the requirement of the vessels Coast Guard Certificates of Inspection. Operates emergency equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, in drills actual emergencies. Serves as "lookout" to assist in safe navigation and handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift.

Compensation:
Salary depends on qualifications. The starting hourly rate and premium pay amounts for each level are as follows:
FERRYBOAT DECKHAND 1
  • has a minimum hire rate of $16.
06/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked
FERRYBOAT DECKHAND 1
  • has a minimum hire rate of $17.
18/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked
FERRYBOAT DECKHAND 1
  • has a minimum hire rate of $19.
67/hourly with an additional $2.00 optional pay for every hour worked.
