Chief Mechanic Marine Construction & Dredging — Gulf Coast Full-Time — Dredge Crew, Rotational
COMPANY OVERVIEW
We are a Gulf Coast marine construction and dredging contractor operating four dredges with a workforce of 200+ employees across field, vessel, and home office operations. The majority of our project portfolio is US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)-funded, with active growth into state-funded and other government-sponsored work alongside an established private sector presence.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all mechanical systems aboard the dredge and attendant plant, with hands-on participation in repair work. The position heads the mechanical side of the planned maintenance program and keeps the dredge mechanically ready with minimum downtime . The Chief Mechanic will work parallel with the Chief Electrician on board the dredge, both reporting to the PortEngineer . This is a live-aboard, rotational position on a working dredge.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance & Repair
- Perform and direct preventive and corrective maintenance on main engines, dredge pumps, gearboxes, cutter drive, ladder machinery, winches, spud systems, and auxiliary machinery per the planned maintenance system
- Diagnose mechanical failures and restore equipment to service with minimum downtime, including emergency breakdown response during production
- Inspect and service hydraulic systems, valves, piping, and pumps
- Maintain lubrication schedules, fuel systems, cooling systems, and compressed-air systems
- Support dry-dock repairs, overhauls, and machinery inspections Planning & Documentation
- Maintain critical-spares inventory; requisition parts and materials through the Port Engineer.
- Keep accurate maintenance, breakdown, and repair logs
- Coordinate with the leverman and captain on maintenance windows to protect production Safety
- Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and/or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) before work
- Abide by company and worksite safety policies to achieve a "Safety First" workplace
- Responsible for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) matters to protect public health and ensure a clean environment
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 10-15+ years of heavy mechanical experience on dredges, marine vessels, or heavy civil equipment
- Ability to work an 84-hour work week
- Ability to live aboard a vessel for full rotation
- Ability to understand hand signals and verbal commands in English
- TWIC — Transportation Worker Identification Credential (or ability to obtain)
- Valid driver's license Preferred
- Cutter suction / hydraulic pipeline dredge experience
- Welding or hydraulics certifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work will frequently require individuals to push, pull, bend or stand for long periods of time, and climb stairs and ladders
- Must be able to lift or carry miscellaneous equipment, supplies, and parts up to 50 lbs.

- Base salary: $110,000 commensurate with experience
