The Young Mariner Program is a STEM-focused, hands-on summer camp for students entering grades 4-7. Campers explore local marine science and coastal ecosystems while building confidence on the water through boating activities, fishing, lobstering, and beach exploration. Days are filled with a mix of on-water experiences and classroom-based STEM lessons and experiments, giving campers the chance to connect what they learn to the environment around them. Each week blends theme-based science content with hands-on exploration, encouraging curiosity, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. The program runs for nine week-long sessions from late June through mid-August and is based at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis. Camp operates Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with counselors expected to work from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Each session is limited to 12 campers.
Job Description:
The Young Mariner Program is seeking two counselors for the 2026 season: one boat-based counselor and one classroom-based counselor. As a Day Camp Counselor, you will lead and supervise campers in marine science and maritime activities while helping to create engaging, STEM-based learning experiences. Working closely with the Camp Director, Boat Captain, and the other counselor, you will help ensure a safe, positive, and fun environment both aboard our vessels and on land. The boat-based counselor will primarily support on-water activities, while the classroom-based counselor will lead land-based lessons and STEM programming.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the Boat Captain and Camp Director in leading activities both aboard vessels and on land. Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of campers at all times. manage camper groups and lead STEM-based marine science and maritime activities. Participate fully in all camp activities, including instruction and recreation. Support daily operations such as camper drop-off and pick-up, setup and cleanup, basic administrative tasks, and site maintenance.
Qualifications:
Required:
Candidates must be local to Cape Cod — housing and housing assistance are not provided. Knowledge of boating andfort working on the water. CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before camp). High school diploma or equivalent. Reliable transportation. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, and to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs. Must successfully pass a
CORI/SORI
background check prior to employment.
Preferred:
Coursework or degree in a relevant field (marine science, education, environmental studies, etc.), in progress orpleted. Experience working with children, summer camps, or educational programs. Strongmunication and teaching skills, with an interest in creative, hands-on learning. Patience, adaptability, enthusiasm, and a collaborative, team-oriented attitude. Availability from June 15 to August 14, 2026 (this includes mandatory staff training) Lifeguard certification.
