Job Description
- 24 hours per week Nature of Work This is responsible solid waste and sanitation work involving hauling household trash and debris and recyclable materials for Cumberland County.
- Completes safety inspections of assigned trucks and equipment prior to operation.
- Drives a sanitation truck along assigned route and picks up trash and other debris from convenience centers, public facilities and schools for delivery to the landfill.
- Mows and cleans the grounds of convenience centers when necessary.
- Assists attendants and drivers with loading, unloading, compressing, lifting and emptying all collection containers.
- Assists with the repair and maintenance of convenience center locations including repairing fences and performing light maintenance activities on the buildings when necessary.
- Operates a one ton truck to collect recyclable material including discarded computer equipment, batteries, demolition materials, glass, oil, etc. and delivers them to the appropriate location.
- Fills in for Convenience Center Attendants when necessary.
- Assists with the cleaning and routine maintenance of front end loaders and one ton trucks used in solid waste operations.
- Provides information to the public regarding solid waste regulations, disposal of various materials, etc.
- Spreads rock and grades the lots in the convenience centers when necessary.
- Attends safety meetings and training session to maintain required certifications.
- Communicates on a regular basis using radio and written communications to effectively coordinate scheduled and non-scheduled routes.
- Makes minor repairs and adjustments to maintain the proper operation of solid waste machinery 1 and equipment.
- Performs minor preventive maintenance activities on solid waste machinery and equipment and notifies supervisors and mechanics of equipment malfunctions.
- Directs traffic around solid waste collection operations when necessary to ensure the safety of the public.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Thorough knowledge of solid waste operations and maintenance including the use of large sanitation trucks and one ton trucks.
- Thorough knowledge of assigned routes for the collection of trash and debris from convenience centers, schools, public facilities, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of traffic regulations pertaining to right of way and related safety procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and minor repair of heavy equipment utilized for solid waste operations.
- Considerable knowledge of the proper handling and disposal of recyclable materials.
- Considerable knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely around heavy equipment utilized in solid waste operations.
- Ability to operate specialized and non-specialized solid waste equipment and machinery in a safe manner.
- Ability to use power tools and hand tools in a proper and safe manner.
- Ability to make proper job related decisions after receiving daily assignments.
- Ability to communicate and interact with the public in a polite and tactful manner.
- Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.
- Skill in the operation of large sanitation trucks and heavy equipment utilized in solid waste operations. Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver License, Class A and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
