License Mechanical troubleshooting Passenger safety Full Job Description ⚓ Sea Tow Captain — Job Description (San Diego) Position Overview A Sea Tow Captain is responsible for providing on-water assistance to recreational and commercial boaters. This includes towing disabled vessels, performing jump starts, fuel deliveries, ungroundings, and ensuring boater safety throughout the San Diego coastal region. Key Responsibilities Respond to service calls via VHF radio, phone, or dispatch system Operate towing vessels safely in harbors, bays, and offshore waters Tow disabled boats and assist with ungroundings Deliver fuel, batteries, or parts to stranded vessels Perform basic troubleshooting (engine issues, dead batteries, etc.) Ensure safety of passengers, crew, and client vessels at all times Navigate local waters including San Diego Bay, marinas, and nearshore Pacific areas Maintain logs, reports, and incident documentation Provide professional, calm customer service in stressful situations Work Environment Based around San Diego waterfront areas (marinas, harbors) Outdoor, all-weather conditions (sun, wind, rough seas) Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays Fast-paced, sometimes emergency-response situationsQualifications Required:
USCG Captain's License with Tow Endorsment (OUPV "6-pack" minimum; Master preferred) Strong boat handling and seamanship skills Knowledge of local San Diego waterways and navigation rules Valid driver's license and clean boating record Ability to swim and pass a physical/drug screeningPreferred:
Previous towing, salvage, or commercial maritime experience Mechanical knowledge (diesel/gas engines) CPR/First Aid certification Key Skills Vessel handling in tight and rough conditions Problem-solving under pressure Communication (radio + customer interaction) Situational awareness and risk assessment Typical Pay (San Diego Area)Hourly:
