Operate the vessel adeptly in varying weather conditions, factoring in crew experience and vessel parameters. Strictly adhere to all local, federal, and USCG navigation rules within the highly trafficked New York Harbor environment. Maintain a complete, rigorous understanding of the vessel's emergency procedures and station bill. Leadership & Crew Management Lead the deck crew through comprehensive start-up and shut-down procedures for each shift. Host effective pre
- and post-trip briefings to align staff on the daily schedule, safety protocols, and guest experience goals.
Foster positive crew dynamics to build a cohesive team and ensure a consistently hospitable environment. Direct the crew in maintaining impeccable vessel presentation, ensuring windows, cabins, cushions, and heads are tidy at all times. Comply with and actively enforce all established company policies and procedures. Guest Experience & Operations Deliver the appropriate cruise route and engaging narration based on the specific sailing schedule. Maintain a professional appearance, wearing the designated Manhattan by Sail uniform at all times while on duty. Promptly report any vessel deficiencies or mechanical issues to the Operations Manager and Engineering team.
Skills and Requirements Required Credentials Valid USCG License:
100 Gross Ton Inland Master (or higher) with an Auxiliary Sail Endorsement . Valid USCG Medical Certificate. Current First Aid and CPR certification. Valid FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP). Ability to pass a DOT 5-Panel Drug Screen and participate in a random drug testing program for the duration of employment. Maritime Expertise Exceptional boat handling skills, specifically in crowded and fast-paced marine environments. Strong foundation in marlinespike seamanship, including expert knot tying and line handling. Solid working knowledge of standard marine systems and basic troubleshooting. Intimate knowledge of New York Harbor traffic, tides, and weather patterns (Preferred). Previous experience serving as Master on a comparable passenger sailing vessel (Preferred). Work Ethic & Environmental Requirements Flexibility to work a dynamic schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Physical capability and willingness to work outdoors on an open deck in all weather conditions, including rain, heat, and cold.
