Semi-Driver / Processor II - Recycle Ann Arbor Must be able to drive a 13-speed manual transmission Recycle Ann Arbor is a mission-driven, zero-waste organization operating innovative reuse, recycling, and recovery programs that improve the environmental health of our community. Position Summary Under the direction of the Operations Manager, the Semi-Driver/Processor II is responsible for hauling recyclable materials, construction debris, and similar loads to and from residential, commercial, and industrial sites using semi tractors, trailers, roll-off trucks, and containers. This position requires strong skill and confidence operating a 13-speed manual transmission. When not driving, this role assists with heavy-equipment operation and recyclable-material processing. The job involves frequent climbing in/out of vehicles and equipment. The Semi-Driver/Processor II ensures safe operations, excellent customer service, efficient material handling, and a successful recycling environment. Essential Duties - Semi Driver Safely operate 13-speed manual transmission semi tractors, trailers, roll-off trucks, and heavy equipment. Pick up/drop off full roll-off containers at job sites (Drop-Off Station, Recovery Yard, MRF, community cleanups, satellite locations). Transport full/empty trailers (live floor, dry box, low boy) to designated recycling or disposal locations. Use in-truck or handheld systems for dispatching, logging, and navigation. Communicate with customers and staff to ensure safe, efficient service. Operate heavy equipment such as wheel loaders and excavators (clearing floors, loading trailers, moving materials). Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections. Comply with all company policies and transportation regulations. Maintain cleanliness of assigned equipment. Train new roll-off driver staff. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential Duties - Processor II Assist customers with unloading and questions. Sort and process incoming materials. Maintain clean, safe public work areas. Assess incoming loads for quantity and composition. Operate point-of-sale systems, scales, and logistics systems (including cash handling). Prepare materials, bins, and trucks for shipment. Safely operate machinery, equipment, and vehicles. Complete opening/closing procedures. Maintain sites for customer safety and ease of use. Resolve customer issues professionally. Support special projects as assigned. Required Skills & Abilities Strong communication skills and ability to work with a diverse customer base. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Professional appearance, ethical conduct, and commitment to safety. Understanding of transportation regulations. Flexibility and adaptability. Ability to operate a cash register and perform basic math. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment (training provided). Education & Experience High school diploma or GED. Valid Michigan Class A CDL with airbrake endorsement. Minimum 1-2 years trucking/transportation experience. Experience with heavy machinery preferred. Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. Clean driving record. Physical Requirements Frequent climbing in/out of vehicles and equipment; bending, twisting, standing, walking, sitting. Ability to perform physical labor in extreme weather conditions for extended periods. Exposure to materials and equipment requiring strict safety procedures. Frequent use of hands/arms; ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
