Job Description
Heavy Wrecker Towing Operator Overview We are seeking a dynamic and skilled Heavy Wrecker Towing Operator to join our team and our heavy-duty recovery operations. In this vital role, you will operate specialized tow trucks and wrecker equipment to assist stranded or disabled vehicles, ensuring safe and efficient recovery processes. Your expertise in automotive diagnostics, mechanical knowledge, and commercial driving will be essential in providing exceptional service to our customers. Heavy Wrecker Towing Operator Duties Valid commercial driver's license (CDL-A) while maintaining a clean driving record; minimum three years experience with commercial truck driving (CDL-A) Excellent driving skills with manual transmission experience A road test will be conducted (manual transmission), including backing up a heavy-duty wrecker attached to a tractor trailer (approx. 110 ft.), between two vehicles Experience operating recovery equipment, tow trucks and rollbacks Safely operate heavy-duty tow trucks, rollbacks and wrecker equipment to recover and transport vehicles from accident scenes, breakdowns, or illegal parking situations Conduct thorough vehicle inspections to assess damage and determine the best recovery approach Conduct safe vehicle loading onto tow trucks, ensuring proper balance and adherence to safety standards Load and unload vehicles safely using appropriate tools such as winches Strong understanding of automotive diagnostics, basic vehicle troubleshooting, and minor mechanical repairs Perform vehicle recovery towing using vehicle mechanics knowledge to troubleshoot minor mechanical issues on-site Perform basic automotive diagnostics and mechanical repairs when necessary to facilitate vehicle recovery Knowledge of cargo securement protocols and safe vehicle loading procedures Secure cargo and vehicles following cargo securement protocols to prevent damage during transit Follow all safety procedures related to commercial truck driving, cargo securement, and vehicle operation qualifications Maintain accurate logs of all recoveries, including details of the vehicle condition, location, and recovery process Communicate effectively with customers, dispatchers, and emergency responders to coordinate recovery efforts, pickups, drop-offs, and special instructions Ensure compliance with safety protocols and traffic laws during all operations Skilled in conflict management with distressed customers, bystanders or team members in high-pressure situations Ability to perform physical tasks such as load & unload operations safely and efficiently A heavy wrecker towing operator position is very physically demanding, including heavy lifting (approx. 100 lbs.), repetitive motion, pushing & pulling, prolonged standing, climbing onto a vehicle or trailer, crawling under a truck, laying on your back in the dirt or mud, patching holes in the roof of trailers, working in all weather, including sweeping snow off the top of trailers.
