Job Description
CITY OF GALLATIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
The purpose of this position is to perform unskilled manual work in the collection of solid waste.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. 1. Collects, pulls and dumps garbage and trash. 2. Assists operator(s) and supervisor. 3. Pulls refuse containers from houses or business establishments and dumps into trucks and operates packer equipment. 4. Cleans area around refuse containers. 5. Picks up limbs, brush, newspapers and other trash. 6. Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas. 7. Assists driver in checking truck and packer for operation. 8. Cleans refuse truck and equipment. 9. May operate sanitation equipment if qualified. 10. Repairs refuse containers. 11. Maintains the environmental services vehicle storage building. 12. Attends the recycling dumpsters. 13. Assists with snow and ice removal. 14. Regular and predictable attendance. 15. Ability to work in a cooperative manner with others. 16. Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
HS Diploma/GED. Previous work experience in waste refuse preferred. Must have a valid driver's license.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary. Knowledge of the safe use and operative and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work. Skill in making repairs and adjustments to equipment. Ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and to determine proper remedial measures. Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods including under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to maintain simple records and prepare reports, manual or computerized. Knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work. Knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation. Ability to operate all types of automotive equipment. Skill in the operation of a variety of small, medium and heavy equipment. Ability to make decisions to accomplish specific tasks and operations within the scope of the position. Ability to interact with the public effectively, professionally and politely, and with discretion. Ability to effectively communicate with and establish and maintain an effective working relationship with department staff and other personnel. Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instructions. Organizational and time management skills needed to meet deadlines. Must have ability to work accurately with attention to detail. Ability to maintain confidentiality.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee is subject to environmental conditions including, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, dust/dirt, grease/oils, waste fumes, moving parts of machinery and extreme weather conditions. Work is generally outdoors. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
