  • ( 2601148 ) Position Information TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is seeking one (1) Fleet Long-Haul Truck Operator I or II based in Austin, TX.
This position supports TxDOT's mission by safely loading, transporting, and unloading construction equipment in the Central Texas Area. Our Haul Truck Operators play a critical role in keeping Texas moving. We support daily operations and respond to emergency and inclement weather events across the state. For a complete list of our total compensation package please visit our website at: Total Compensation Package To view benefits available to all State of Texas employees visit: Benefits at a Glance | ERS (texas.gov) Position Description Performs work as a long-haul truck operator loading, unloading, and transporting throughout the state of Texas vehicles and heavy equipment such as: a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine, and dump truck. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Monitors and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) checklist, and records work in progress. Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities to include tires and equipment attachments. Operates tractor-trailer haul trucks to relocate heavy and light equipment including loading, securing, and unloading equipment on haul trailers in compliance with federal, state, and Department motor vehicle laws, regulations, and standards. Trains other employees on equipment operation and safety procedures. Supports emergency Continuity of Operations efforts, including disaster response, evacuations, emergency supply transport, and operating light and complex heavy equipment during emergency operations. Contributes to budgeting and cost-efficiency efforts for fuel usage, vehicle maintenance, and operational logistics. Plans and coordinates deliveries and routes to maximize operational efficiency and meet deadlines. Coordinates with divisions, districts, and vendors to deliver and pick up heavy and light equipment. May lead training efforts on long-haul truck operations and safety protocols, including compliance with federal and state transportation regulations. May oversee other drivers ensure compliance with regulations and optimizing logistics during emergency operations. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Fleet Long-Haul Truck Operator I
  • 3 years of experience in transporting and/or operating maintenance and/or construction equipment . Fleet Long-Haul Truck Operator II
  • 5 years of experience in transporting and/or operating maintenance and/or construction equipment .
Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience securely tying down and transporting construction equipment.
Competencies:
Equipment operation used in transportation construction and roadway maintenance work and proper loading and unloading methods Commercial vehicle traffic rules and regulations Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes Operating light duty and complex heavy construction/maintenance equipment Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment Prioritizing and organizing work assignments Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports Training in a classroom, office, or field environment Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Drive and ride in a vehicle for extended periods Ability to plan and organize delivery routes and manage operational logistics
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Conditions of Employment:

Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events. Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
