The sanitation driver is responsible for the safe operation of front-, side-, or rear-loading garbage trucks. This role keeps communities clean by following strict schedules and complying with local and state waste disposal rules. [1, 2, 3]
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Drive and Operate:
Safely navigate large commercial vehicles through tight residential or commercial streets, traffic, and alleyways.
Waste Collection:
Operate mechanized lifting arms or assist crew members in loading and compacting refuse, recycling, or bulky brush items.
Vehicle Maintenance:
Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, check fluid levels, test brakes, and report mechanical issues.
Route Compliance:
Follow maps and assigned schedules to complete daily pickups efficiently.
Public Interaction:
Answer basic citizen questions politely and follow safety protocols around pedestrians and traffic.
Requirements and Qualifications
License:
Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
Education:
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience:
Typically 6 months to 2 years of driving heavy trucks or working in a sanitation environment.
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs, climb in and out of the truck repeatedly, and work in extreme outdoor weather conditions.
Testing:
Subject to mandatory drug and alcohol screenings as required by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
