The City of Avondale has an opportunity for a Senior Traffic Signal Technician in the Engineering Department Performs journey-level, skilled work in the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical and electronic traffic control devices, communication systems, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components. Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signal systems. Maintains traffic signal equipment by performing preventative maintenance and repairs on traffic signals, illuminated street signs, poles, video detection equipment, and controller cabinets. Checks and verifies proper operation of controller units, load switches, wiring, vehicle detection, emergency vehicle preemption equipment, battery backup units, signal poles, conduits and pull boxes, PTZ cameras, pedestrian crossing equipment, signal heads, and luminaire roadway lighting, and other items as required. Maintains inventory, installation, maintenance, repair, replacement records, and related work order records. Provides emergency response callouts and repairs, which includes making detailed checks, troubleshooting, and locating causes of signal failures. Works under pressure at intersections during malfunctioning signal operations. Integrates and maintains ITS and Traffic Signal Systems including CCTV systems, vehicle detection systems, fiber optic, and wireless systems. Review and approve special provisions, material submittals, specifications, standard details, construction plans, and blueprints. Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, power, and hand tools related to this position. Performs general maintenance and cleaning on equipment, machinery, and tools. Keeps inventory of tools, materials, and supplies. Ensures adequate inventory of materials. Assist with the operations of the signs and markings job duties as needed. Monitors City streets to identify downed poles, inoperative lights, needed repairs, or other situations requiring attention; initiates corrective action. Trains Traffic Signal Technicians and other employees as necessary. Participates in Traffic Signal & ITS pre-construction meetings as needed. Reviews and approves special provisions, material submittals, specifications, standard details, and construction plans/ blueprints. Meets with contractors and vendors for site inspections and inventory deployment. Performs other duties as assigned.
High School diploma or GED equivalency. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in roadway lighting and traffic signal maintenance and a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Traffic Signal Technician. Must possess a Level I Roadway Lighting and Level I Traffic Signal Certification at the time of hire. Must obtain a Level II Roadway Lighting and a Level II Traffic Signal certification within six (6) months of hire. Work requires the ability to read blueprints and blue stake papers. Work requires the ability to write detailed maintenance documentation. No supervisor responsibilities. Normal tasks require the use of defined procedures, with little deviation. Work requires some analysis. Knowledge of Cobalt Safetran System Controller preferred. Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains streetlights including lamps photocell, ballast, fuses, and related devices. Rewires ballasts and light poles. Locates power sources to streetlights and installs street light wiring systems. Repairs and maintains traffic signals and poles as needed. Test all new signal equipment before field installation (cabinet, controller, MMU, etc.) This position will have contact with others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City which may be involved in decision-making, providing approval, or decision-making authority for purchases or projects. Work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. Coordination with various agencies, including the county other municipalities, and state and federal agencies. Contact with vendors and suppliers may also be required for information on purchases, supplies, or products. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers and sales representatives. The employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
