ITS TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION JOB SUMMARY
The ITS Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and ensuring reliable operation of ITS infrastructure—such as traffic signals, sensors, cameras, detection systems, communications equipment, and associated control systems. Works both in the field and in control/utility enclosures, often under varying environmental and physical conditions. Must follow safety regulations and use specialized machinery and tools when required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Install, align, calibrate, and maintain ITS equipment including traffic signals, variable message signs, CCTV cameras, detection sensors, radar, weather stations, signal cabinets and communication links. Inspect routine ITS devices to identify wear, damage, or malfunction; perform preventive maintenance. Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, network, and communications issues to restore service. Respond to system failures, emergency breakdowns, or malfunctions outside regular business hours as needed. Read and interpret engineering and electrical diagrams, signal plans, network topologies, vendor specifications.
Document all work:
maintenance logs, repair records, parts used, system performance metrics, incident reports. Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and supplies; order replacements. Coordinate with contractors, utility providers, city or state agencies, traffic management, under supervision and approval from management. Operate specialized service vehicles and machinery—including bucket trucks, aerial lifts—as required to access elevated or otherwise hard-to-reach devices. Always Follow safety protocols; use personal protective equipment; ensure safe operation of equipment and safe work zones especially near traffic. Other duties may be assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Primarily in the field: intersections, roadways, signal poles, utility poles, heights, outdoor sites.
Also in indoor spaces:
signal cabinets, communications closets, control rooms. Exposure to all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind, possibly snow). High exposure to traffic, noise, and vehicle emissions when working near or on roadways.
Elevated work areas:
using ladders, bucket trucks, aerial lifts, climbing poles/signal arms. Sometimes work during off hours (nights, weekends, emergencies). Possible exposure to electrical hazards, moving parts, vibration, and sometimes confined spaces.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand for long periods. Frequent walking over uneven terrain, road shoulders, sidewalks, site to site. Climbing ladders, poles, signal arms; working at heights using aerial lifts or bucket trucks. Bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting torso. Reaching overhead and outstretched arms, reaching above shoulder height.
Fine motor skills:
handling small parts, connectors, wiring, making adjustments. Lifting and carrying tools, equipment, parts; regular loads up to ~50 lbs (sometimes heavier with assistance or equipment). Pushing and pulling heavy or bulky items or cables. Ability to climb into and out of lift buckets or platforms; maintaining balance in elevated positions. Operating controls (manual or powered) of bucket trucks / aerial lifts.
Ability to use safety equipment:
harnesses, lanyards, protective gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, insulated gloves where needed.
Vision requirements:
near vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception. Hearing and speech sufficient to interact safely: hearing traffic, machinery, alarms, speaking clearly to coworkers, using radios. Comfortable working in variable weather while elevated or on equipment (wind, cold, heat). Dexterity and coordination to safely handle the machinery movement, boom controls, platform stabilization.
EDUCATION
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One year certificate from college or technical school preferred. OSHA 10 Minimum, 30 preferred.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or associate degree in electrical, electronics, telecommunications, or related field preferred. Experience with ITS or similar systems (traffic signals, detection sensors, communication networks). Valid driver's license; good driving record. Certifications for working at heights / aerial work platform / bucket truck operation (or ability to become certified). Knowledge of relevant safety regulations (OSHA, DOT, utility safety), electrical code, traffic control/safety. Ability to read technical diagrams & documentation; good computer & network skills. Physically able to perform field work under various environmental conditions. Good problem-solving, ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Must be able to Install and proficiency wire a cabinet. (Signal cable, detection loops, ped poles, preemption equipment, Video Detection Systems, Wavetronix radars, etc.) Install and proficiency wire traffic signal heads.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Must possess relevant certifications required for the role.
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check. Must pass a pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Test Must demonstrate eligibility to work in U.S. Possession of Valid Driver's License is required for this role. At times, CDL Class will be required.
