Job Description

Perform special duties as assigned. To perform traffic signal maintenance in accordance with all established safety standards, VDOT policies, and procedures and operational standards.
How you will contribute:
Communications:
Communicate effectively and provide customer service when dealing with VDOT employees, contractors, responders, and members of the public.
Maintenance of Traffic Signal:
Maintain a large number of traffic signals through ordinary maintenance, maintenance replacement and preventive maintenance programs. Conduct regularly scheduled checks of major signal components through use of a laptop computer communicating to central through a modem in the cabinet.
Perform Preventative Maintenance :
Perform periodic preventative maintenance and inspections of electronic devices and related equipment for assigned program areas. Perform duties as assigned. :
Signal Inspection :
Communicate effectively with the public concerning operations and problems with traffic signals. Communicate with the police department regarding traffic signal work and repairs.
Traffic Signal Repairs :
Respond to complaints and reported malfunctions of traffic signal and troubleshoot a wide variety of sophisticated electronic traffic control devices and equipment using frequency meters, volt meters, ohm meters, m 1QQ8'S and soldering tools. Install signal controllers using laptop computer to program timings into controller. Troubleshoot 170-control box using complex wiring schemes and various hand tools and metering devices to make repairs. Use MIST system to check timings and monitor signal systems. Identify intersections for timing and detector problems. Respond to 511 related activities as they are of an urgent, emergency nature requiring immediate response. Monitor and implement changes in traffic signal timings for system and isolated signal operations. Use laptop computer to program controllers and conflict. Monitor system problems and communicate with other system signals.
Troubleshoot and Repair Electronic Devices :
Diagnose and repair electronic devices for assigned program areas.

Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing. Ability to keep detailed and accurate records. Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of signals, components, use required equipment, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and in inclement weather. Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments; keep detailed and accurate records. Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergency situations within a specified period. Ability to use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment to perform maintenance on traffic signals. Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, signal equipment and their operation. Knowledge of management systems to include timing plans, graphic design, and computer use. Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations. Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers. Valid Driver's License.
Additional Considerations:
A combination of training, experience or education in the electrical field or related field desired. Commercial Driver's License IMSA Roadway Lighting certification desired. IMSA Traffic Signal Level I technician certification desired. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and VDOT rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
