Job Description Transload Operators with Cando are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services. Working in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment, the Switching crew must work well in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills. Roles & Responsibilities Ensures safe operation of the locomotive/trackmobile and train movements; participates in job and safety briefings to receive communication regarding the daily operation Applies rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a transload operator or conductor including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars including air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes Provides protection of train, track, and equipment Performs equipment inspections and necessary repairs; completes daily inspection and testing of the trackmobile brakes and safety devices Complies with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practices and promotes safe work habits Keeps the interior of equipment and customer site safe, clean, and tidy Performs yard checks and produces yard inventory sheets Promptly reports all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Shift Supervisor and/or Manager; undertakes and tasks assigned by the Shift Supervisor Exerts "best effort" to protect human life, human safety and company property Actively participates with the team and provides excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image Participates in training or company initiatives as required Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings switching lists; read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals Physically fit including the ability to pull self up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches Ability to work flexible hours at a 24/7 operational site; work outside in all weather conditions Ability to obtain and maintain all required certifications and safety critical medical clearance including clear drug and alcohol testing Education & Experience Experience in the rail industry or an industrial environment Experience operating trackmobile and locomotive would be an asset
