New York, NY, USA Summary of Position Cadre's Transit division offers our clients technical rail service solutions including commissioning and testing of new transit vehicles, warranty, repairs, preventive maintenance, and inspection services. Our contractors work with the leading Ontario transit suppliers and agencies, ensuring their equipment is available to provide reliable on time service to their passengers in some of North America's largest transit systems. The Commissioning Technician will be responsible for the testing, validation, and final acceptance of new or overhauled locomotives prior to delivery into passenger service. The role involves hands-on troubleshooting, system verification, and collaboration with engineering and customer teams to ensure locomotives meet all performance, safety, and reliability requirements. This position requires proven locomotive experience , strong technical aptitude, and the ability to work in the field under tight schedules and high safety standards. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: Execute commissioning, testing, and validation activities for new or rebuilt locomotives. Perform functional and dynamic tests on mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to propulsion, braking, HVAC, lighting, and onboard diagnostics. Record and report test results, deviations, and corrective actions. Interface with engineering, quality, and customer representatives to resolve technical issues. Support field modifications, software uploads, and configuration changes as required. Ensure all work complies with safety, quality, and regulatory standards (FRA, APTA, OEM). Participate in technical reviews, test procedure updates, and fleet reliability feedback loops.
Competencies/Skills:
Technical Diploma or Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of experience in locomotive, rail vehicle, or heavy rolling stock commissioning or maintenance. Strong understanding of locomotive systems (propulsion, braking, pneumatic, control, and communication networks). Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and test procedures. Hands-on experience with diagnostic tools, test instrumentation, and data logging equipment. Comfortable working in outdoor rail yard environments under varying conditions. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Attributes:
Familiarity with TCMS , CAN-bus systems , and software commissioning tools . Knowledge of FRA and AAR standards for passenger locomotives.
