Job Overview Innovative Rail Consulting and Engineering (IRCE) provides both rolling stock (Locomotives, Rail cars, Wagons…) and infrastructure (Rail, stations, facilities, OCS, signaling...) solutions to the Freight and Passenger rail sectors as well as the mining sector. IRCE's key capabilities include the following services for existing, upgraded or new rail Infrastructure and rail vehicles: maintenance engineering, design and design support, project management, QA/QC, risk management and components/parts supply or repair. The Railcar/LRV mechanic role is a two-year contract, full-time, on-site position based in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Responsibilities Remove wheel hubs, journal bearings and other axle mounted components from rail vehicle axles following OEM specifications. Inspect the removed wheel hubs and journal bearings to OEM specifications and determine whether they must be replaced. Use a heavy-duty press to press replacement bearings onto the axle following OEM specifications. Record pertinent bearing and wheel hub replacement data such as press tonnage and distance graphs and wheel back-to-back (or center hub) back-to-back measurements. Inspect other axle mounted components to OEM specification and replace them as necessary. Utilize workshop machinery (eg: cranes or forklifts…) to move mechanical equipment needing repair or parts and equipment as necessary during the repair process. Perform additional rail car, wheels or axle repairs as necessary. Responsibilities include diagnosing issues, troubleshooting faults, and installing, upgrading, and modifying mechanical components. The role involves reading and interpreting engineering drawings, following safety and compliance standards, and documenting work performed. Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other team members to ensure reliable operation of mechanical components on client projects. Document all maintenance activities, repairs accurately in logs and reports. Adhere strictly to safety protocols during all installation and maintenance procedures to prevent accidents or damage Experience and qualifications: High school diploma or GED. 5 Years of experience servicing rail vehicle axle unit assemblies. Technical Certificate, associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering are a plus. OEM and rail/transit experience is a plus. Proficiency operating Heavy Duty wheel press to replace rail vehicle axle bearings. Proficiency in Mechanical Maintenance and working with a variety of mechanical equipment. Strong understanding of Mechanical principles and basic Mechanical Engineering concepts. Demonstrated ability in Troubleshooting mechanical issues and identifying root causes. Experience reading mechanical schematics, drawings, and technical documentation. Familiarity with relevant mechanical codes, standards, and safety practices (e.g., OSHA, NEC, FRA, AAR). Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting. Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment. Ability to handle manual tasks safely including lifting heavy parts and working in confined spaces. Experience working with diesel mechanics or similar heavy vehicle maintenance environments. Familiarity with maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) practices specific to transit vehicles. Knowledge of safety regulations relevant to railcar repair work to ensure a secure working environment. Ability to read schematics and technical diagrams for electrical and mechanical systems. Excellent customer service skills for interacting with team members and supporting operational needs effectively. Willingness to work on-site in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and occasionally adjust hours to meet project needs.
