Primary Purpose:
Perform minor and major mechanical repairs to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of district vehicles. Complete assigned projects in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED required Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain one within six weeks of employment ASE certification(s) preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision Skill in operating diagnostic and repair equipment Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine repair, electrical systems, brake systems (including air brakes), suspension, and drivetrain components Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, policies, and procedures Effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to lift and move heavy equipment and vehicle components Ability to operate school buses and other district vehicles safely
Other Requirements:
Must be at least 20 years of age Possess a safe driving record Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) alcohol and drug testing requirements and annual physical examination
Experience:
Minimum of two years of experience as mechanic, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repairs 1. Use diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical and electrical issues in district vehicles. 2. Perform minor and major mechanical repairs on school buses and other district vehicles. 3. Perform welding and minor body repairs as needed. 4. Conduct preventive maintenance services according to established schedules. 5. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate components; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps, and other parts; and maintain proper fluid levels. 6. Maintain accurate, up-to-date preventive maintenance and repair records. 7. Inspect vehicle systems, equipment, accessories, lights, and safety components; service and repair as needed. 8. Demonstrate preventive maintenance procedures and inspection processes to mechanic helpers. 9. Service and maintain shop equipment, including bleeding air tanks and performing schedule and preventive maintenance. Safety 10. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery in accordance with established safety procedures. 11. Follow proper techniques for lifting, climbing, and other physical tasks. 12. Identify and correct unsafe conditions in the work area; report uncorrectable conditions to the supervisor immediately. 13. Maintain a clean, organized and safe shop environment. Other Duties 14. Maintain accurate records of labor time and materials used for repairs and service. 15. Operate school buses and other district vehicles as required. 16. Work irregular hours when necessary. 17. Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed and be available for morning and afternoon routes. 18. Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing and tire repairing equipment, hand and power tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and vehicle lifts, school buses, and other district vehicles.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Frequent walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside around moving vehicles, and mechanical equipment. Exposure to varying weather conditions, dampness, humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
